They'd have made more of the same overrated flashy soulless crap they always made and always will make. Blaming Enix for the formula not working anymore must be satisfying for a Square fanboy though.

This.

I like some of the old games, but they really are more flash than substance.

I feel sorry for someone who can't acknowledge that many of Squaresoft's games were benchmarks in the gaming industry. Back in the day, they set many trends and created many games that people thought weren't possible at the time. You really think Square (a company not known for making sequels) would have come out with shit like Dirge of Cerberus, Kingdom Hearts Spin-off #394, that Final Fantasy music game, etc. if they didn't merge with Enix (a company well known for bunging out sequels left, right and center)?

At least Squaresoft accepted it when their experiments failed (Spirits Within, Ehrgeiz, The Bouncer, etc) and moved on. Square Enix has a general attitude of "You thought our game sucked? IT MUST HAVE A SEQUEL THEN! AND TWO SPIN-OFF TITLES WHILE WE'RE AT IT! WE WILL MAKE YOU LOVE THESE GAMES!"

dude, Ehrgeiz was amazing. who didn't want to play as a poorly-rendered Cloud and awkwardly smack Sephiroth around for hours??

FF7 was convoluted and confusing, and required Ultimania to make sense of some parts. They may have made benchmarks, but I preferred other titles over their OMG SO AMAZING FF7 (4 and 8, for example, are my two favorites, while 7 actually ranks low).

Just because they were benchmarks in, you know, animation and the like doesn't mean they had amazing and fluid stories that weren't confusing. In the end, I don't play because a game was a benchmark. I play because the plot actually catches my eye. And I've enjoyed FFXII a bunch more than I ever enjoyed FFVII.

FF7 was also very poorly translated - some of the confusion falls at the feet of the localizers, not the writers.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
That doesn't change that there are way too many plot twists for a coherent storyline, unfinished sideplots, etc. And this is a problem that appears even in FF8, so apparently they don't learn from all their mistakes.

Again, I'd sooner play for the plots and not the benchmark graphics and music. Those are just a nice bonus, but not as great if the plot has me going, "...Wait, what happened?" And while I can enjoy FF7, it's not at the top of my replayables.

I agree with you, actually. While FF7 was nice and all, it had nothing on FF6 or Chrono Trigger. Those games felt so much more polished and consistent. Still Square, but you're right - by FF7 and FF8 they'd already begun their slide into graphics > quality even before Enix came along.

...I rather enjoyed FFX, though >_>

I think the Enix merge got them more into the groove of developing their worlds. As I said below, I'm in love with FFXII. Yeah, they made some big mistakes in the battle system ad some pacing issues, but hot damn, dat world. I actually care about NPCs.

Legend of Mana is not soulless.
