Oh my gosh. FUND IT! FUND IT! SOMEONE DO THIS!

[identity profile] sparklywalls.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I hear Hamill's voice pretty much all the time when I read the Joker anyway, including TKJ, so I'd definitely support this.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yes.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry but NONONO! I LOVE Hamill's Joker and I think The Killing Joke is a must-read for any Batman fan, but I do not want to see it turned into an animated movie. It's hard enough to see Barbara being shot in the stomach and Joker leaning over her with the camera ready as he begins to strip her in a still panel on a page, I do not need to see that in in motion, complete with her groans of pain. I do not need to see an animated version of the scene where Jim Gordon is stripped and forced to view pictures of his daughter naked and bleeding out. I know The Killing Joke is popular (at least in part because it's a story with Joker as the focus) and there's a lot of interesting backstory about Joker's life in there, but there are other Joker stories out there that aren't as uncomfortable to read, that don't glorify in sexualised violence against a well-loved female character. I have no doubt Hamill's performance would be amazing, but he'd be amazing in any Joker story.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I kind of have to agree with this. The Killing Joke is an amazing book, but it's also damn upsetting to read. I've only read it once and it never really left me - it's haunting, but not in a good way, in a can't-block-out-the-images way. Which is exactly what Moore was going for, so props for that. Again, not disputing it's a visceral and gripping read. But I can't believe that anyone would want to see an animated version of it.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Then don't watch it.

Just because you don't want to see the icky bits, doesn't mean other people don't. Geez.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
DA
That's true but I think anon has a good point that there are other Joker stories out there that would make better movies. Just because the Killing Joke is one of the most well-known doesn't mean its the best suited to adaptation and those scenes (Babs being shot, the whole carnival ride bit) are a defense of why the KJ wouldn't be comfortable viewing.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
I think what happens in The Killing Joke goes beyond "icky bits", TBH.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
THIS.

[identity profile] kryptoncat.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not familiar with The Killing Joke, but if they made an animated movie of it, do you think they would make it tamer than what anon has described up there?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT
Possibly - while the Joker shooting Babs is a major plot point, the stripping her naked is gratuitous and vile. Jim being stripped is equally pointless. They're both supposed to be psychological attacks, like it's not enough for the Joker to shoot her, he has to go one further. But the stripping could, theoretically, be left out. Its just that I don't trust DC to do that. In the Batman: Year One animated movie, they've cut out most if not all of Harvey Dent's best moments, ones that established his initial partnership with Batman, but they've kept in Millar's 'women are saints or whores' origin story for Selina. DC alter pretty much all their adaptations, which is fine, but they don't always alter them for the better, and I don't exactly trust them handling what happens to Babs delicately. Plus you KNOW there'd be fanboy rage about them cutting the stripping parts because it would damage ~the integrity of the story~ or whatever. >:I

[identity profile] he-is-wild.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
UNPOPULAR OPINION TIME: I love the Joker but I have some issues with Killing Joke even in regards to his characterization. Like the stripping just seemed like a cry for an attempt at edginess and his whole plot in the story seemed somehow unhinged and lacking in his usual finesse. Plus the story never made me laugh or even crack a smile.

I do love the book, but it sort of established this thing where people try to one up each other's edginess re: Joker. I'd dare say toning it down a bit would make it BETTER. But...this is just my own opinion, others may disagree.

Oh boy, an excuse to post this! (http://youtu.be/qa0R_2K9iec)

Yeah that would be pretty fucking sweet. :D

[identity profile] he-is-wild.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
It'd be interesting to see, if done tastefully! The fridging of Babs is kind of ridiculous and I'll agree stripping her naked (closest Joker has come to a sex crime in the MU) is over the top. They could leave her clothes on it would probably be more tolerable (while we're at it, Gordon should have clothes too) and not hinder the story. The only reason I can stomach the scene in retrospect is that Oracle is such a wonderful character.

Now the big problem with it, even though DC owns all the rights is that Alan Moore might eat somebody.

[identity profile] mistaria.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
I totally agree that I can only stomach TKJ because of how great a character Oracle is.

And I don't know about Alan Moore... they've already made movies of some of his comics so I don't think he'd have much say against it happening.

[identity profile] he-is-wild.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 09:19 am (UTC)(link)
They have made movies on his stuff! He pretty much complains every time.

I like the Killing Joke, but the Batman story I would LOVE to see made into a movie is The Long Halloween, although The Dark Knight took a lot of influence from it so that might be kind of redundant.

[identity profile] mistaria.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
Haha there would be so many people bitching about how the movie was just copying TDK and then the real comic book fans would step in and be all "uh, no."

I'd love to see it made into a movie too... TDK used a lot of good elements from it but I'd love to see some of the villain interactions in motion.

HOLY SHIT YES

Di Maggio

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
Even though Hamill is not my fave Joker (I didn't grow up with B:TAS), I do hope he comes back for at least one more animated film, and it should be a big one. He has the sort of crazy and playful voice that would suit TKJ Joker.

I'm hopping John Di Maggio (Joker in 'Batman: Under the Red Hood') can snag more Joker gigs in the future. I thought he was really good and I immediately warmed up to his Joker voice. Wouldn't mind if he became the new "go to" Joker voice actor, to be honest.

Re: Di Maggio

[identity profile] tastylogic.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not alone in liking Di Maggio's Joker! Most of my friends are diehard Hamill as Joker fans and would not shut up about how Di Maggio's was "inferior". I'd love to see him do more.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Hamill uses the Simpsons version of himself as an avatar? That's kind of adorable.
