It's a bit dark and I understand why a kid would be upset with that, but I love that movie, it's also cute and funny.

[identity profile] straydog733.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Sinister is a really good way to put it! It just feels like all of the characters have a bit too much dark side, and everything is going to end horribly no matter what. Not nearly as dark as the sequel, but the cat from the original still freaked me out like nobody's business.

[identity profile] icarian-ink.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
God, the sequel. I liked the first one, even though there were moments that made me uncomfortable, but the second kept me awake at night (given I was about 8). *shudder*

omg, I totally understand your bizarre childhood trauma. As a child, I was terrified of the book Nosy Mrs. Rat. I have absolutely no idea why... but it frightened me so badly, I begged my mother to donate it to Goodwill, and we NEVER got rid of books.

(And look! Nosy Mrs. Rat on Reading Rainbow!)

[identity profile] wrestlingdog.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I could see that. It does have a rather surreal darkness to it. But that's what I like about it.

(I'm in no position to judge, btw, as ET freaked me the fuck out.)

[identity profile] icarian-ink.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
if we're talking about movies that irrationally scared us as children: Mouse. Hunt. from what I hear now, that movie is in no way scary. tell that to traumatized little me.

[identity profile] lunarkitten.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
My dad took me to see Mouse Hunt in the theater. I don't remember why, but I was terrified of the ending too and I don't think I've seen it since. :[

For me it was Fern Gully.

I still can't watch ET. :/

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! Sinister is the perfect description! It just feels like, at any moment, something could go horribly wrong for anyone in the movie.

And it felt like the narrator was in on something bad that we (and the characters) didn't know about.

It was just the right amount of dark for me as a kid, but I did used to fast forward and start like, halfway through because I couldn't deal with the opening slaughterhouse scene (I was raised vegetarian so I had a really strong sense really young of OH MY GOD THEY'RE ALL GONNA GET EATEN AHHHH). But I loved the soundtrack!

[identity profile] cysfics.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
I thought I was the only one who found the whole film vaguely foreboding. I feel better.

[identity profile] smittenlotus.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
I thought the Baa Ram Ewe thing was pretty damn weird too.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I loved it, but is still terrified me. I stopped eating pork for years and was wary of cats for a good while.

And oh that poor bitten sheep. ;_;

And Babe's mom.

And, okay let's stop. D:

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
I always got a sense of melancholy from the movie rather than sinister. I saw it in the theater when I was little and it made me so sad at parts. To this day I can't watch the movie without crying, and I rarely cry during movies.

I really like the movie, though. The "If I had words" scene is so touching.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah that opening scene? Stuff of nightmares.

[identity profile] hopeandmemory.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
that was so upsetting. :/ that's why these kinds of movies always get to me, the idea that the offspring know their parent is gone... ugh, it's so sad.

[identity profile] zalixethbe.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
I don't remember much about Babe- I haven't seen it since I was a kid- but I do know that I also found it somehow upsetting and creepy. :/

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
I think I liked the first one, but I remember that the second one was incredibly dark. Like, I think it gave me nightmares. Accurate?

[identity profile] havemy-heart.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's because I was already in college when it came out, but I find nothing sinister about this movie. It has sad parts and funny parts, but nothing is creepy to me *shrug*

[identity profile] elica.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 08:27 am (UTC)(link)
This.
I just thought tha,t for once, a "kids" movie would describe what really happens to animals. In industries and in farms. Animals don't get all friendly and happy like in a Disney movie. They compete, fight, sometimes eat each others.
That's life. It's not sinister nor strange, it's just life.

[identity profile] xerxes92.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
I just have a problem with this movie after the nightmare that was the Animal Farm film because I can't help but associate them because... well, farms and pigs...

[identity profile] subarashiine.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 09:16 am (UTC)(link)
LOL those weird/dark moments are probably why I loved Babe so much when I was young. Then again, one of my other favorite movies as a kid was Beetlejuice xD

[identity profile] adlanth.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 10:16 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I watched Babe again just a week ago and was struck by the dark elements. Then again their presence does make sense, and it prevents the sweetness (awww look at that little pig) from ever becoming cloying. I was charmed all over again.
