What I hate is that a lot of the defenses for this attitude that you can see right in this thread are never leveled at western slash, even though it does the exact same thing with startling frequency. But whenever people want to complain about offensive gender stereotypes in gay porn they turn to yaoi. Slash does the exact same thing and never gets called out on it the way yaoi does, not to mention a lot of the people who complain about yaoi have only read or seen one or two things and don't actually know anything about the genre. There's a huge double standard here.

A-freaking-Men. I'm so sick of seeing yaoi get hammmered for this when most people aren't familiar with the genre, much less the history of it and it's evolution when slash does the exact same thing and it's even worse since they don't have the history and societal expectations of Japanese women to explain it. There are some similarities but also some major differences, especially in today's society between the treatment of women in USA culture and Japanese culture. Roles are still very limited for women in Japan but not so in the USA, so why do western fans of western shows feminize men so much? What do they have to gain by it except OOC men?

Yaoi is written by straight women for straight women, not gay men (that's bara). It always has been. That's not say that gay men or lesbian women can't enjoy it or be pissed off about it but they're not the designated audience for it. It really pisses me off when people expect it to reflect real life gay relationships in Japan or the USA. It's not supposed to. It's a fantasy of women written by women, not a reflection of reality.

It's a way to explore and possibly subvert women's roles in Japan. It's a way for them to explore their sexuality in a safe, somewhat distanced manner as even though the uke behaves like a girl, he has male parts and provides that necessary mental distance for women who require it. It's a stress relief valve.

I'm also tired of seeing people complain about the uke's sexual passivity. Guess what? It's a reflection of women having sex in Japan. Reposting this a billion times isn't going to make your opinion more valid than anyone else's. Just because yaoi (and uke/seme stereotypes) reflects Japanese culture and Japan's general view on relationships, doesn't mean the genre isn't any less problematic or offensive.

I definitely agree with this. The woobie thing has existed in slash before there was BL, and I feel that when people rag on BL but not slash, it's a sort of cultural elitism.

I always took "yaoi" to refer to anything that had gay men but had fangirl culture going on in it.
