I think the "asshole" part was that someone felt the need to respond to the OP's post about their (unnamed) disorder with a random comment about how PCOS can totally be cured, and anyone who still suffers from it just wasn't willing to do the 'work' (defined as a raw vegan diet). As someone with PCOS, nothing burns my ass more than being told my disorder is just "an excuse for being fat" or "a lifestyle problem" -- that attitude can be actually damaging to your health.

And for the record, even if you're doing well with diet/exercise, you will always need to keep an eye on your hormones if you have PCOS. It's not like getting over a cold, that will always be with you.

Well, this particular comment you are replying to had nothing to do with this discussion, more the (recent?) negative perception of [livejournal.com profile] stella_down on F!S

For what it's worth, I agree with you. Hell, I get tired of people insisting that diet is a cure-all for everything. "Eat a better diet and start running and your bipolar disorder will go away!" NO IT FUCKING WON'T.

heh, I have an aunt who believes that depression can be cured with "just a little bit of sunshine"

Hell, I get tired of people insisting that diet is a cure-all for everything.

LOL. I had a doctor once who the best saying: "diet and exercise won't cure whatever ails you, but it'll help whatever cures you."

It didn't matter what drug or therapy he put you on, he was pretty much guaranteed to put you on a food/exercise program as well. ^^

Well that's fine, I'm not saying that diet and exercise can't help because it's good (and necessary) for everyone to eat healthy and get exercise. I'm just saying, all these new age hippies trying to convince me that I can cure any disease with the right foods and yoga or whatever piss me off

I'm not arguing. I'm sharing an aphorism that supports your point: diet and excercise can get you far, but only so far. You still need the "whatever" that cures you. ^^

I can cure any disease with the right foods and yoga or whatever piss me off

When all you have is a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail, I suppose.

Hey, I've been off meds (no insurance) for almost three years now, and diet and exercise do help a lot-when I'm eating shit and not going to the gym I tend to cycle through moods a lot quicker, and tend to have more mixed episodes-where I've got the full on racing thoughts, but no desire to get out of bed and *do* anything about them.

When I'm eating well and going to the gym 3x a week, it's a lot easier to keep my moods stable. (ad then i get a depressive episode that will completely throw me for a loop and get me off the schedule for a couple of months until things cycle back and I get back in the gym, and am good for 7-8 months with just diet/exercise keeping things stable.

I've been off meds for about a year now (same deal, no insurance and I moved to another state where there's virtually no programs for the uninsured) and changing my diet has been really helpful in that regard. I haven't been getting a whole lot of exercise though, because of the heat wave and my bike having fucked up tires. Limiting my alcohol consumption actually seems to be the major factor in controlling my moods actually

So yeah, I'm not saying that diet and exercise don't help because they do, but they don't eliminate the mental illness. To be quite honest, even meds don't eliminate bipolar, they just help with the symptoms (when I was on lamictal I would still get depressed from time to time, I was just able to deal with the depression better by logically recognizing it as a temporary state of mind that would eventually pass -- something I had trouble with when I wasn't taking meds)
