Yup. Someone on dA recently said 'but if you're a girl and you like seeing two guys together, that is objectifying and you should feel bad!' and I just kinda went "lol I don't give a fuck." I mean seriously, it's not hurting anyone, so what does it even matter?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-12 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a big fan of objectification as long as it gets turned off for important stuff.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-12 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, pretty much this.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-12 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I think most people don't care unless it has to do something about them then it's ttly bad

[identity profile] goobbledigook.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I think people mostly care when they need to work out their wank bone

[identity profile] pelespen.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
AHahahaha 100% this.

[identity profile] raichu100.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
lol XD probably at least partially true though.

[identity profile] billybobfred0.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Wouldn't wanking be when people are least worried about who they're objectifying?

... Oh, wait, you meant the other kind of wank, didn't you?

I think it depends on what "objectifying" means in this case. Having a kink or sexual attraction for any of the things you mentioned (except maybe ponies and alines, IDEK what to say about that) isn't a bad thing, as long as one is respectful about it, and separates their sexuality fantasies from how they see actual people who are female/gay/disabled/etc.

[identity profile] gethenian.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I think 99% of the time the word "objectifying" is used on the internet in these kinds of discussions, it's used incorrectly by people who don't know what it means or aren't sure why they're trying to say what they're barely saying, they just want a cause so they can feel morally superior by applying either personal or imaginaty ethics to situations that don't involve them personally.

Example: I've seen a lot of people claim that pornography of any kind is, by default, objectifying and therefor bad. Why? Because it's shameful to get pleasure from what turns you on if you're not getting it from your own partner in a relationship that involves more respect of one another's minds and souls than basic, instinctive lust? That's fucking stupid. It gets even more fucking stupid when people try to claim that fictional characters can be objectified. As if they were ever intended to be anything ELSE. There is nothing inherently wrong with that.

I think it's possible to "objectify" someone if you know them personally and treat them as nothing but a piece of flesh that dispenses sexual favors or makes your life somehow more convenient in exactly the way any soulless android could. You objectify a person when you use them with no regard to what they want, but this is really only an applicable term when it's done IN REAL LIFE. You cannot "objectify" imaginary beings or images. You can KINDA make an argument that writing creepy porn about real life people or celebrities is objectifying them, but given the likelihood that the people writing this stuff will ever even MEET the objects of their fantasies, I don't see how it's relevant.

So I agree with the OP, there's no reason to give half a fuck about this "objectification" bullshit unless we're talking about people in a real life relationship, where it's generally called either "abuse" or "having an asshole for a boss," and should be treated as appropriate for either situation.

THIS. Well said.

you could replace the word "objectifying" with literally any other social justice buzzword and you'd still be right. these discussions exist only to bolster the egos of the people involved, especially on tumblr, where a reblog to 'signal boost' some actual issue is all it takes to prove how conscientious and aware you are.

"reblog this post about how the Occupy Wall Street people downtown need food and blankets. I'd be out there with them, but I was in this flame war on sf_drama all day and I just don't have the spoons for it."

This is a good comment.

[identity profile] xizarx.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks God! This a thousand times.

Sometimes it feels like it's just an aesy stone to throw at people that enjoy soemthing others don't, to make them ashamed of their kink.

These days it seems like one's walking on thin ice trying not to offend someone in fandom. Every homosexual person I talked with about how women like "gay stuff" (slash, yaoi, even yuri I guess, though it might be a bit different) don't care, don't feel offended, they even enjoy the idea. But fandom needs to make wank, of course.

[identity profile] 10littlebullets.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
I do think it's possible to objectify characters--not by writing porn about them, or even by being more interested in writing porn about them than in writing loving in-depth character analyses or whatever, but by being completely dismissive of anything but their fap potential. It's the difference between the fuckbuddy who knows you have a life outside booty calls but doesn't ask you about it because it's not relevant to their interests, and the sleazoid who thinks anything else you do is a frivolous accessory to your main purpose in life of being sexy 24/7. Why shouldn't that distinction extend to lusting after fictional characters? Just because the word 'objectification' gets misused and slung around indiscriminately in fandom wankfests, and SJ warriors tend to bawwwwww as though real people are being hurt, doesn't mean the concept can't apply to fictional people as well as real ones.

To use an example, I'd be a bit skeeved talking Doctor Who with someone who thought the companions were mostly there for T&A purposes, even though I'd fuck most of the cast to Alpha Centauri and back. Not because OMG PERPETUATING THE OPPRESSION OF WOMEN, but because it's obnoxious and kind of sketchy, and I can't think of any more surefire way to piss in my Cheerios than to cut off my squeefest about what a BAMF Martha Jones is with "Yeah, I guess, but Amy's hotter."

On the flip side, I think Amy is smoking hot and definitely included on the "would fuck all the way to Alpha Centauri" list, but I'm not particularly invested in her plotline. And I wouldn't particularly want to talk Doctor Who with anyone who'd get their knickers in a twist over someone saying "nope, don't give a shit about her as a character, but I'd hit that like the fist of an angry god," because that's not objectification.

Ughh the word "objectify" is thrown around EVERYWHERE nowadays. I deal with it enough in my English literature class, I don't want to see it when I'm relaxing on the internet. I don't really take part in fandom that much so I suppose I don't really "objectify", but it seems like the internet has only one thing to argue about these days.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh. Tell me about it. My English literature class is similar. My teacher is always saying "objectify, "objectify, "objectify. She spent an entire hour-long class trying to prove to us that the vending machine outside the classroom was objectifying women, because the Mars Bar swirl on the side of the machine looked like a vagina (it didn't. It just looked like the inside of a Mars Bar).

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
i, too, give very few fucks about this

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I see your point OP. Now... please excuse me while I think dirty thoughts, and objectify the heck out of the guy in the picture you used for your secret. Mmmmmm... *fap-fap-fap*

SN: I am a disabled guy, who just happens to also be gay, and I truly don't care if I'm "objectified", I just want to to get laid.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
+1!

The only thing I could think of when reading this was, "I'd like to objectify the hell out of this guy!"

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahahaha you're fantastic, well said anon!

[identity profile] dinerstate.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
As long as everyone's being objectified equally then no fucks will be given from myself.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
You're right, most people don't care. That's why this world is such a festering shit hole.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
You're a festering shit hole. Guess the judgeyfuckism helps you feel better about that.
