Sorry, but if finding out something like that totally and irrevocably changes how you look at the actor, you probably do have some unexamined issues there you need to work out.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-12 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

From the wording, it seems like OP assumes everyone is straight until proven otherwise? And when they find out the actor isn't straight, it colours their perception of the actor - they no longer see the actor as a normal person with talent and an engaging personality, they see them as a Gay Person. Like, their sexuality becomes their defining characteristic.

Honestly, OP, it sounds like you do have some kind of problem with sexuality, even if you make an effort to be liberal. It might just be buried deep, and it could be a good idea to explore it and figure out why you feel like that. Because while you may be feeling that way about actors now, in the future it might be somebody you care about that you discover is gay. And if you react the same way, if it colours how you see them, then they could notice that and end up being incredibly hurt.

Yeah, seriously.

This.

It might be that, while you accept and even embrace it a little, you just aren't used to seeing it so openly? I know there are still a lot of places where it isn't something that you see in your day-to-day life and so I could see how that might be a little jarring.

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
This is kind of a complicated thing, I think. First, I don't think there's always something inherently bad about caring about sexuality. Celebrities' sexualities do hold some importance to me, because I like seeing out celebrities and it's fun when I learn that a female celebrity I find attractive has come out. We don't have many out LGBTQ celebrities, so I don't feel any guilt for being happy about the ones we have.

But, on the other hand, I think being unable to look at someone the same way because of their sexuality, and finding it that disruptive, does suggest there may be a hold-up there. Maybe it's something you're just not used to seeing. I think society is so heteronormative that it can be hard to think past that.

In any case, I don't think you're doing anything blame-worthy. Might be worth thinking about where these feelings may be coming from, though.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-12 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
This. A lot of people (especially online) tend to forget that the world is still predominantly heteronormative and that there's still tons of people living in areas where seeing a queer person expressing themselves comfortably is incredibly rare, dangerous even. A good example is my sister. She weighs upwards of 500lbs. When I see her, I see my funny and dorky sister. When other people see her, they see a very fat woman and they stare. So really, I don't think the OP is homophobic, I think they're merely unused to seeing it out in the open.

Just remind yourself that the actor is not the same person as their character. Actor X might be gay, but character Y is straight (or vice versa, or anything else) and has a completely different personality and maybe appearance!

It kind of annoys me when actors are portraying a character in one show and the viewers keep talking about them as if they were the character from a show the actor was previously in. If I were an actress that would bother me, since type casting is one of the least desired things in that business.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I hate that too.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
I'm kind of surprised there wasn't more wank here. Maybe everyone's wank-fuel got drained on secrets 8 and 11.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
I don't find anything terribly wanky about this secret, though. I sense no apparent homophobia. Ignorance, maybe, but based on other answers and the wording of the secret it sounds like it could just be a matter of growing up/living in a more conservative part of the country. This obviously isn't good or progressive but I don't think wank is the answer.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
are you fucking serious?

op is discomforted about the idea that some of her favourite actors might be gay. that is definitely homophobic, even if it's born out of ignorance. most homophobia is born out of ignorance, in fact, so idek what the fuck you're trying to pull here

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
being asexual does not make you part of the lgbtq spectrum and does not give you a free pass on being homophobic, which you clearly are

hth

Overreacting much

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
But being homo-romantic does, which OP said she had leanings towards...?

Of course, being part of the LGBTQ spectrum doesn't give you a free pass on being homophobic either, so the point is moot.
