I'm going to speculate here and say that people weren't too fond of Slytherin after the way they acted during the battle at Hogwarts.

(Which is something that may not have entirely been their fault, and also made me angry at JK Rowling. But I can see where in that universe it didn't come off well, and also may have been distorted in stories over time.)

Either way there seems to be a lot of Slytherin cynicism and hate floating around without Albus Severus needing to get it from his immediate family necessarily.

Good point! I kinda half agree only because I always imagined children in the WW not going to school before Hogwarts? (I may be wrong about this?) So, they probably wouldn't have much interaction from people other than their immediate family?

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure they don't go to school. (Is there interview canon on that? I'm not sure.) But I always figured the families must visit each other's houses and maybe the kids get together for playdates and stuff. I got the impression they weren't all total strangers to each other before school.

Draco seemed to already have friends on the train, for example. (OK, he in particular presumably didn't hear crap about Slytherin...)

I'm not sure either. It seems like something that would be from an interview tho. Oh yeah, good point! I can see that happening.

Interview canon is that kids are sent to muggle primary school or else are homeschooled. But clearly people socialize with each other, and have to shopping, etc. In this case at the least the kid's got a huge extended family.

This!

I mean, look at Harry- he had only the world of like three people before swearing off Slytherin. And I bet Hagrid's not the only one spreading about that Voldemort was a Slytherin, which would put most eleven year olds off.

(And I like* that we don't hear about any other houses having mass exoduses from the battle, which you'd think would happen- we can't all be Gryffindors. Logically, wouldn't some Ravenclaws go "I have no dueling training, to hell with this" and flee? Possibly with half the Hogwarts library?)

*and by like I mean hate

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. I can't believe no one in any of the other houses just said "You have got to be kidding."

(Though apparently there were plenty of families were keeping their kids home by then, but I can't imagine all the kids still there were 100% badass and loyal except for those darn Slytherins.)

[identity profile] ikabod11.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, most of the Ravenclaws did leave.

I haven't read Deathly Hallows in forever- did it say that? I just remembered Slytherin specifically being singled out in a nasty way.

[identity profile] ikabod11.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it says that. All of Slytherin leaves, then most of Ravenclaw, followed by a good portion of Hufflepuff. Only all of the Gryffindors stayed. It's fandom that singles out Slytherin.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
My bad. I really did not remember that either.

(Though still, if Rowling's message was not to judge by houses she could have been a bit more balanced. Still, I was totally wrong.)

Yep
