I'm going to speculate here and say that people weren't too fond of Slytherin after the way they acted during the battle at Hogwarts.

(Which is something that may not have entirely been their fault, and also made me angry at JK Rowling. But I can see where in that universe it didn't come off well, and also may have been distorted in stories over time.)

Either way there seems to be a lot of Slytherin cynicism and hate floating around without Albus Severus needing to get it from his immediate family necessarily.

[identity profile] tabitha666.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Good point! I kinda half agree only because I always imagined children in the WW not going to school before Hogwarts? (I may be wrong about this?) So, they probably wouldn't have much interaction from people other than their immediate family?

This!

I mean, look at Harry- he had only the world of like three people before swearing off Slytherin. And I bet Hagrid's not the only one spreading about that Voldemort was a Slytherin, which would put most eleven year olds off.

(And I like* that we don't hear about any other houses having mass exoduses from the battle, which you'd think would happen- we can't all be Gryffindors. Logically, wouldn't some Ravenclaws go "I have no dueling training, to hell with this" and flee? Possibly with half the Hogwarts library?)

*and by like I mean hate

Probably got it from dear old bigoted Uncle Ron. I mean lets face it, even if harry and Ginny keep saying that Slytherin does not equal bad, and Sevvie-babes was really a good guy in the end, Ron is still going to have been banging on about those snakey bastards at every family dinner. Because Ron was an asshole. I bet every time Harry and Ginny turned their backs, Ron was all "yeah they say they'll love you if you get sorted into snake-central, but they really be dissapointed, and you won't be a-commin' over here for Christmas dinner no mores." Ron would probably justify it to himself as just tryin' ta be honest and tell it like it is.

While I think you are exaggerating for the sake of being an ass, you're probably right on the money saying it was Ron.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's just a reputation that kids have about the house? I mean, that stuff spreads easily. At my university there's a reputation about one of the colleges being full of assholes; I knew about that way before I met anyone from the college and it just spreads.

I doubt that the family would be spreading hate all over, but it just happens.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-12 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
---"I doubt that the family would be spreading hate all over"---

Apart from the Weasley side. Lets face it, his mom's side of the family have had a big Slytherin hate-hard on from book one. He'll have been listening to that ever since he was born.

[identity profile] murderershair.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
You just reminded me that when I was taking a summer arcitecture course at Cambridge, one of the professors mentioned that one of the colleges was called "Slytherin" by the others because they had the most funding. So yeah, reputations happen.

That said, this is Harry Potter land, so it's totally possible that little Al heard Uncle George make a joke about those stinky Slytherins and took it a bit too seriously.

[identity profile] i-paint-the-sky.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I figure that, as well as [livejournal.com profile] rosehiptea's point, the Gryffindor/Slytherin rivalry might still be well in effect. And given that James II is probably in Gryffindor (I can't remember if this is said but I think it's a fair assumption), I could imagine that Al might have heard some smack about Slytherin from him.

I don't understand your confusion. Syltherin hate has been around FOREVER, so why WOULDN'T some young, impressionable kid be susceptible to it?

[identity profile] june-miller.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm tired of that all "woe is me" Slytherin talk. It is one of the most popular (if not the most) house. The most defended, the most praised, the most blahbalhblah. Enough, please.

It's been a while since I been interested in Harry Potter so my knowledge might be a bit rusty. However, if I remember right, didn't everyone have something against Slytherin? That's been there since the first book.

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Well, Albus Severus grew up within the wizarding world. He probably knew other wizarding families and such, and the anti-Slytherin prejudice from families that weren't Slytherin families themselves was a pretty common thing. So even if Harry and Ginny weren't talking about evil Slytherins or whatever he was probably still hearing about it. It's not like how Harry didn't really know anything about the wizarding world and his only reason for not wanting to be in Slytherin was his run-in with Draco.

[identity profile] atanvarne-lj.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I would think Ginny's sixth year at Hogwarts with Snape as Headmaster and the Carrows terrorising the students would have put her off Slytherin House for life.

That's just me, though. Carry on.

[identity profile] mistaria.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Well didn't Ron basically go on about how his kids better not be sorted into Slytherin? That would be one source of the fear.

Not to mention what happened during the final battle with the Slytherin students.

Good point. I imagine it was Ron's kids

[identity profile] raichu100.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
I thought Harry's line of "Then Slytherin will have gained an excellent wizard!" or whatever it was he said was appropriate.

I think Slytherin's reputation was at one point at least partly earned; it will take time and work to erase the negative stigma attached to the House, and I'm glad Harry is emphasizing that it's not such a bad thing.

As for talking about how Harry didn't want to go there after hearing about it from three people: he was an impressionable 11yo kid. What did you expect? Also, he knew nothing about the world he's just been thrown into, and is probably really damn scared. As he matured and gained perspective and understanding, I think it's clear that he isn't really so inclined to judge by hearsay as when he was so young.

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
I bet Harry pulled a Ted Mosby and just over-exaggerated everything about Slytherin to make his stories more interesting and villainize the entire house.

Granted, many of those he and his friends encountered were horrible people, but I can see him laying the pressure on regardless-- just because it would make the story more interesting.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-14 12:51 pm (UTC)(link)
It doesn't have to be that complicated or intentional. Kids do pick up on things and sometimes those things turn into fears without their parents really realizing how scared they really are. I mean maybe he heard something about it somewhere and it festered but he kept it to himself until that day at the station.
