I figure that, as well as rosehiptea's point, the Gryffindor/Slytherin rivalry might still be well in effect. And given that James II is probably in Gryffindor (I can't remember if this is said but I think it's a fair assumption), I could imagine that Al might have heard some smack about Slytherin from him.

This is my exact thought. James probably teases him about it and draws unfavorable comparisons between Al and the Snakes he doesn't like.
