I think that was sort of the point, anon. I usually hate the woobification of villains but I definitely think Tom was playing Loki from that angle (if you watch any interviews, you'll see he's clearly done a lot of thinking about the character and really feels for him.) And I sort of got the feeling that the movie was intended to be more of an parallel origin story for both Thor and Loki to set them up for The Avengers than it was any sort of Asgardian-on-earth-fish-out-of-water typical comic book movie.

tl;dr: I think that you were supposed to view him as an anti-villain.
