some places actually need more babies born in order to support the aging population

Some places need to encourage immigration from more populous regions to their area to support the existing ageing population.

Um no, how about we provide more education, access to birth control, and relief from poverty? The problem isn't simply numbers.

[identity profile] elica.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Some places need also to deal with their patriartic and sexist system, the situations that makes women fly from marriage fast because it would mean quitting their jobs, staying at home and raising child with an absent husband.
Happen to Germany and Japan.

THANK YOU.

Seriously?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-12 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
And tell me, where would you suggest people immigrate from/to? Mexico to America? The US border states on the edge of Mexico have a bloodbath and full-out meth war on their hands right now, in case you don't read the news. Or maybe from Libya to Great Britain, where there are few jobs and even less affordable housing? Where do you want to start shoving people/from to in the silly and naive belief that people will be just fine if only they can live long enough among white folks?

How about we all take responsibility for our own problems first (in America, that would be the meth addictions on Reservation lands, urban poverty, rural illiteracy, and 9% unemployment just for a start) before importing them?

Exactly what did he say that was wrong? those are all real problems right now.

What were trying to say here?

Re: Seriously?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
pretty sure they were mocking the (somewhat older) idea 'primitive' cultures and peoples will be better off if they adapt to society as europe and america, etc. have it (the white folks).

you.. apparently didn't take the hint of 'silly and naive belief' very well that was not THEIR view white folks are the right/only way.

Re: Seriously?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-12 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
You sound grossly uninformed and childish. First world countries are not Candyland, and ripping people away from their origins and ethnicity and transplanting them into Candyland to support old-ass Candylanders sound like just another form of exploitation to me.

Re: Seriously?

[identity profile] diorama23.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha, they aren't being 'ripped away' do you know how many people are trying to escape their country because of war, or persecution? They want to work in a country where they don't have to worry about being killed. They want to live peacefully and not worry about their children being blown up.

They are so desperate to live in other countries that they are willing to get on leaky boats and risk drowning, or going across borders and risk being shot so they can have that dream. Do you know how many displaced people there are in the world?

It's not about ripping people from their countries, it's about accepting people who are without a home.

Re: Seriously?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-12 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't accept house guests you can't feed. It's a hard thing to say, but a well-functioning nation at peace runs on more than just philosophy an political slogans. There's a very good reason why immigration is strictly limited to what the economy and society will comfortably bear. Can't you figure out why?

If you picked up a whole city of say, Syrians, and dumped them together into a city in a first world nation, it would be chaos. That's because people don't turn into different people just by virtue of being moved a few thousand miles. Immigration is more than just moving boxes and bodies: it's assimilation into the new FUNCTIONING culture (you know, the one without tanks on the streets?) so that it isn't just the old culture all over again on new ground. Doing that takes time and money and care, stuff that most first world nations no longer have.

So really, Peter Pan, grow up.

Re: Seriously?

[identity profile] diorama23.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I live in a country which has a population shortage and a employment shortage, we don't have enough people to fill the jobs we have. And the Government responds by encouraging people to have more babies and giving people money to have babies. Meanwhile, we have refugees risking their lives to come here and the Government is like 'fuck off' and most people are like 'fuck off' because those people are brown.

The country I live in, is a first world country, it's Australia. If we can't accept refugees then we're assholes. And I'd say the same with any first world country.

Re: Seriously?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-12 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you even read the reply? You've been told over and over again why functioning and peaceful governments (who have worked hard and long to evolve their functionality and peace) don't simply fling their borders open to all, you're just not hearing it.

Re: Seriously?

[identity profile] diorama23.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I guess that whole 'Give me your tired, your poor/Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free' was a limited deal and only restricted to white people.

Re: Seriously?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, you're in the sixth grade. Political slogans won't keep a nation afloat. You've been told over and over why every well-functioning nation has strict immigration policies in place, why it works, why it's necessary not just for the well being of potential citizens but the continued existence of the native society as well, you just don't want to believe it. I can't help you with that (and neither can the slogans).

Re: Seriously?

[identity profile] diorama23.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
If you're going to keep on telling me I'm a child. I have better things to do with my time other than being patronised online. bye.

Re: Seriously?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I apologize. That was unwarranted of me. It just seemed to me like you were ignoring what I was trying to explain to you (the "give me your tired and poor" remark for example) in favor of one-liners and slogans. It irritated me.

But yes, that's a very good slogan. Too bad that human nature and the global economical logistics no longer make it viable. Such is life.

Re: Seriously?

[identity profile] diorama23.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Apologies I'm assuming you're American. I'm no advocating 'unrestricted' immigration, I'm just saying that right now, in the world - there are so many displaced people and nobody willing to take them - and meanwhile in some richer countries there are opportunities and the only reason that I can see why they aren't accepted is because of racism.

Re: Seriously?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
If that's the only reason you can see, you're not looking hard enough. There are plenty of other reasons.

Listen, I'm not heartless. I understand people are just people and they just want to live and they want to live in peace and in relative comfort. I understand they need somewhere to go. The only way to make sure that the peace and comfort will be there for many more in the decades to come is by strict regulation. Is some of the regulation too strict? Is some of it discriminatory? Yes, it is. I don't have the answer to that, but I'd rather it was too strict than too lax. :-/

But I do know the answer to a declining birth rate is not immigration. Considering how long and complicated and HARD the process of obtaining American citizenship is, that's just never going to work.

Re: Seriously?

[identity profile] mika-kun.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
You need to do more research about immigration and the challenges surrounding it. While I'm not going to go so far as to say that racism isn't ever a part of immigration policy, here are also other concerns. Important questions are: Are the people we are letting in going to be able to contribute? Do they speak the language? Do they have the education/skills to work in the jobs for which there is a current shortage of workers?

Re: Seriously?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-12 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Britain and America are not the entire world.

Re: Seriously?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-13 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
You're welcome to name all the first world nations if you like. So we can all play global chess and decide what native cultures would be best moved to where.
/flippancy off

Re: Seriously?

I feel like this thread is really about Japan, which really is a county with a vastly shrinking population, a hate of immigrants, sexism resulting in women avoiding marriage, and a shitload of old people. America doesn't have much of a shrinking population problem, though I will point out that immigrants are taking the jobs no one fucking wanted anyway. Did you hear about the fields literally filled with rotting unpicked food in Arizona? Or are you disappointed because a mexican took the job at the slaughterhouse you wanted?
