Even though the metaphor is a bit awkward, I totally know what you mean. There's nothing wrong with liking fandom as long as it doesn't go too far. It IS possible to be in fandom and have a life/be socially well-adjusted. If fandom makes you happy and doesn't take over your life, there's no problem. :)

You know, not everyone's real life is so damn desirable. If someone has no friends irl it's not necessarily due to them being socially inept. There are other factors.

Guess what. NO ONE who isn't "socially well-adjusted" wants to be like that.

So, yeah. If someone has an otherwise crappy life due to reasons that are, contrary to popular belief, not their fault and not just a matter of "get off your ass and do something about it and get a life", who are you to judge them for finding some happiness, friendship and a place they feel they belong in fandom?

Wait, what. I know that it's possible to not have friends IRL without it being a person's fault. When I was in 4th grade I literally had zero friends because I moved schools. It was one of the hardest years of my life, and it honestly changed me a lot as a person.

I just meant that being in fandom and being socially well-adjusted aren't mutually exclusive states of being. Which is a common thought. In one of my film classes a classmate mentioned fandom/fanfiction with such disdain that it was kind of ridiculous.

I don't get where you're getting that I'm judging people who are in fandom, though. I love fandom. I just mean "taking over your life" if you have something that fandom interrupts; like if you're failing all your classes at college because you are doing nothing but fandom, that's when you might need to step back and reevaluate things. I love fandom, though. I've met some of my best friends via fandom, and I know that I wouldn't have been able to get through freshman year at college without the JPop fandom. Honestly, without JPop, I probably would have dropped out of college freshman year.

I honestly don't get where you think I'm coming from, though :/

I guess people are just over-defensive here what with all the trolling.

Which raises the question of how often they visit the community, since you are one of the nicest and kindest members here and it's highly unlikely you would ever comment with the purpose to insult someone.

But, yeah, that was an overreaction.

If that totally non-judgemental comment bothers you this much and makes you feel as if your identity/way of life is threatened then good grief you have got to have one miserable life. Though you might be trollin', idk.
