I'm not sure I understand your weird sense of elitism about this, lol.

lol nevermind.
no subject
no really, what sense of elitism? there isn't even anything to be elitist about ffs the internet is a shithole.

but having been on the internet for as long I can remember (which is at least 14 or 15 years) is absolutely not one of them!

About the same here, and I'm not proud of it either. It blows my mind that there are people who are. I've met them. It's a terrible thing. Usually leave wanting to punch them in the face. I'm glad you aren't one of them, because the internet really doesn't need more megalomaniacs.
no subject
I'm not really ashamed of it, I'm just not proud. it's just been a thing in my life for a long time is all. I'm curious to know how old you were when you first went online now :o (I'm 23 now so do the mathsss)
I've been involved in small and large scale trolling, taken part in my fair share of wank but these days I'm pretty chill about stuff. I actively avoid places where dickheadish people converge in large groups so my time online is rarely spoiled.

I'm 23 too. I think it was around 1998 when I first actually posted online, but I know I went on AOL-for-kids or something before that and played games because that's all my mom and stepdad would let me do, lol. After I learned how to navigate by myself I pretty much stuck to the same few websites over and over, mainly fanfiction and anime parody stuff to make me feel less ronery before I met people irl who liked it.
I think most people who get really worked up or angry about things are younger and inexperienced, so they don't know any better. I've never really done trolling (just not my thing) but outside of a few secrets comms like this I never really interact with too many anons or unknowns anymore. (I think the worst one is actually loli-secret, which is full of girls taking a frilly fashion waaay too seriously.) I'm not in any fandoms in particular atm either so I'm sure I'd be more subject to dickheads if so.

I'm only guessing saying it was around 1998, it might even be as early as '96, I'm just not certain. I don't know much of what I did in my early days but I know in late '99 I took my first foray into trolling haha. then I discovered fandom in May 2001 (Harry Potter to be specific) and I've never looked back since then. I left that fandom way before the final book came out but I've been in plenty of others since.
all fandoms have a group of vocal and annoying fans who give everybody else a bad name ): depends where you go I guess, fans on livejournal can be really different to those on tumblr and so on.
I think a lot of people who get worked up, in my experience are either dealing with a genuinely cunty person (whether they're being mean, stupid, ignorant etc doesn't matter) or they just don't know how to recognise a troll. not sure age has anything to do with it, really.

Oh my, don't I know it. I was in Death Note fandom at its peak, which had the worst rep of any others at the time. I guess I was lucky, because most of the people I met were pretty cool, but I did see and get linked to some insane 'tards. I'm sure you know the pain, especially hearing what I have about Homestuck fans. (Most of which seem pretty laid-back to me but uhh...?)
Hm, you're right. Bad wording on my part. But I will say some of the most vocal fandom crazies at least are young and hormonal and not sure what to do with themselves. Not that I wasn't there myself for a while, lol, and not that older people can't be nuts. One of the Death Note fandom's most annoying and recurring members was almost 35, if I remember correctly. It's awesome to be in fandom at that age, but posting incoherent ramblings about your Sims to every other comment in every post is a little much.

You seemed like it was an internet failure on my part to not know what an abbreviation was, then went on to say you'd been on the internet longer than me, which is usually elitism speak.
Sorry if I misconstrued what you said though, it's easy to do online :o
no subject
firstly, I actually thought you were kinda dumb for not knowing what it was but whatever. secondly, I said maybe. for all we both know you could have been online longer than I have.
thirdly since when is being on the internet for a long time a thing to be proud or happy about? trust me, if I could forget the things I've seen, I would. I don't think I'm better than anybody for seeing a man stick a jar up his bum and clench or pictures of people with half their body missing and I'm not weird enough to think that seeing that kind of thing is cool.
tl;dr my statement was to be taken literally and you should really read comments properly in future!!!!

guess we're both lucky that cp is extremely hard to find.
no subject
Isn't Anonymous doing something to track down a CP (as I will now refer to it) ring? At least with them, the internet has a beacon of hope for being slightly less terrifying.
no subject
I asked lj abuse if there was anything that could be done about it but they were like sorry we can't do jack. I don't understand why dick pics are not allowed, but pictures of people with crushed skulls are.
re: jaded vs high tolerance, for me it's both but with more focus on the latter maybe. as I've been more exposed to things I become less bothered by them - the power 5 is a great example. they used to turn my stomach when I was 15 but now they illicit no reaction at all.
I have no idea what they're doing at the moment, I don't keep up with their activities nowadays. if they are, kudos to them.
no subject
it was thoroughly disgusting but I still think it was an odd thing to get sick over.
Just gonna reply to both at once
I'm the same way. I've seen a lot of parodies and such of them, some even before seeing the actual video, so that may have had some effect on me because my first reaction is to laugh, not gag. Try explaining that to someone who isn't online regularly.
There are many other reasons people should be gagging when they read Twilight, lol. I haven't had the chance to read the birth scene, personally, but I doubt it's anything new. I read Poppy Z. Brite when I was 13 and she wrote about vampire babies eating their way out of the womb and aborted fetuses on rusty metal hooks, but now I'm curious...
Re: Just gonna reply to both at once
there are a lot of things on the internet you'd find it hard, impossible or damn awkward to explain to people who aren't online a lot. even to people who are online a lot actually. it's more about the sites you visit and the people you know I guess, rather than the time spent.
I read through all 4 books late last year to see how bad they were - they are so terrible you have to see it for yourself because it's impossible to truly convey it through words alone. I actually thought the whole pregnancy plot line was just very weird, a bit disgusting but nowhere near enough to make me feel sick let alone be sick.
maybe because Alien is one of my favourite films is why the scene didn't bother me. I first saw it when I was pretty young so I've had time to acclimatise to the content.
