People can get over it and write you something you like. Not everybody likes porn or even shipping.

You're in the wrong fandoms. ;) But you shouldn't feel guilty - in an exchange someone is supposed to write a fic for you, write the kind of fic you like, so they can just suck it up and write some nice gen for you, even if they usually prefer shipping fic.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-24 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Is gen somehow considered inferior? Maybe a little more difficult but that hardly seems worth complaining about.

I hope you're in one of my fandoms! I'd love to see more gen requests!

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2011-11-24 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Don't feel guilty! If someone isn't comfortable trying to write for someone, they shouldn't sign up for exchanges.

I would love it if there were more gen requests in my current fandom.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-11-24 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
No, that's a good thing! I love non-gen stuff, sure, but friendship is also essential and I think it makes a good challenge for a writer.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-24 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
wait wait wait

you mean genfic is not something people enjoy writing?

i haven't been to many fic exchanges, but that sounds really odd

i had never encountered scorn for genfic

i mean, in fic exchanges you can request what you want

if people don't want genfics then the mod can simply make a rule to not allow them or something

but i find it odd that that would ever be necessary

genfic is the minority, but i didn't know it was so unwanted :(

am i lucky to be in the right fandoms, or what?

Aw, I prefer writing genfic for exchanges and usually receiving it, though I don't mind getting smut. (I can state this because I never use this account when I actually participate in them) I think it probably depends on the fandom.

[identity profile] kryptoncat.livejournal.com 2011-11-24 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Don't feel guilty about wanting gen fic. People who complain about what other people want in fic exchanges need to take a lesson in selflessness.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-24 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Man, that's stupid. Those people need to get over it. o_0 If they only want to write shippy stuff or smut, they should just avoid fic exchanges.

I personally can't write smut and don't like reading it. Guess I should stay away from fic exchanges...

[identity profile] rabidsamfan.livejournal.com 2011-11-24 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I ask for genfic in exchanges because the porn is easy to get and the genfic isn't (at least, not as easy.) And because sometimes that's what I'm in the mood for.

Don't apologize, OP. You're expanding people's skills.

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2011-11-24 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
All the fic exchanges I participate in are very clear about whether gen requests are okay or not. If the mods for your exchange give it the ol' thumbs-up, and it's what you want to request, then everyone else can either (a) not participate in the exchange, if they can't stand writing non-shippy fic, or (b) suck and deal in exchange for someone else writing them a juicy bit of smut. Taking option (b) and then griping about it is . . . churlish. Sounds like they need to make their own exchange comm.

Man, I would love to see more gen in any and all of my fandoms. Don't feel guilty about requesting it, OP - I guarantee you there are other people on the comm who would like to read it, too. They may not be as vocal as the people who shun it, but I'm sure they're quietly enjoying having gen to read, all the same.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2011-11-24 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
And I feel guilty because I always want slash.

[identity profile] rayiroth.livejournal.com 2011-11-24 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Consider Yuletide is the only time I ever do fan fictions of any kind, if there are hate toward my gen-tendency I'm not in the fandom to know it. I only asked gen and only write gen. I don't have many readers but certainly there are no hostility either. So.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-11-24 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone has preferences; gen fic is definitely great. When I write I tend to ship, but actually I LOVE fic about friendships.

If all you want is Gen fic you should ask for it, and people shouldn't be upset. Not everyone has an interest in shipping or wants it all the time.

[identity profile] cherrycoloured.livejournal.com 2011-11-24 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
This surprises me. Maybe it's because I'm not a fic writer, but I'd think gen would be a better thing to request. People are picky about ships, but with gen there aren't any so anyone, no matter what they ship or if they don't, could write it.

(no subject)

(Anonymous) - 2011-11-24 03:14 (UTC) - Expand

I normally write ship fic

(Anonymous) 2011-11-24 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
...but I find gen fic a huge relief to write, and I like writing it for exchanges and gift fics and the like. Frankly, I get sick of writing UST and/or porn all the time, and character/plot pieces are a nice change. I guess I don't understand why you'd feel guilty requesting it, because surely a lot of people are like me, and take a ship-break every once in a while.

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2011-11-24 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
don't feel guilty. Genfic is great! Granted, I'm shippy as hell and I love porn too, but gen is not in any way something to complain about.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-24 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
Don't feel guilty. Im a much bigger gen fan than ships fan and I make that clear. Im not big on romance. While my fandoms dont get upset about it, it's very hard to find or get requests filled so I understand. Ships rule all unfortunately

[identity profile] unrelatedgtfo.livejournal.com 2011-11-24 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
I like shippy fic fine, but I almost think genfic might be better for exchanges. 99% of all the drama I've ever seen in fic/fandom gift exchanges has been over pairing preferences and ship wars.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-24 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Speaking as a writer who prefers to write genfic. Don't feel bad, OP. Not all of us out there want to write all ships all the time.

[identity profile] shy-nerthuserce.livejournal.com 2011-11-24 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't beat yourself up. You like what you like, OP, & that's it - you're entitled to your opinion & you shouldn't feel guilty! :¬) I don't blame you for resenting those who complain about gen requests; it's not as if someone's holding a gun to their heads... *rolls eyes*
