you mean genfic is not something people enjoy writing?

i haven't been to many fic exchanges, but that sounds really odd

i had never encountered scorn for genfic

i mean, in fic exchanges you can request what you want

if people don't want genfics then the mod can simply make a rule to not allow them or something

but i find it odd that that would ever be necessary

genfic is the minority, but i didn't know it was so unwanted :(

am i lucky to be in the right fandoms, or what?

Yep. Genfic is seen as worthless and inferior in nearly all of my fandoms. Most common statement I see is "if I wanted to read genfic, I'd rewatch the show!"

I used to really prefer romance fic myself and not particularly feel like seeking out gen, because canon was gen. But... I didn't think that made it worse, just maybe not my thing.

If they mean "therefore no one should write gen ever" then yeah, they're being douchey.

That's exactly what they mean. I've lost count of how many times I've been told in comments on my fic that I'm "wasting my time and talent when I could be writing Pairing X."

aw, i don't think that means worthless and inferior, tho! it's just not what most readers are looking for.

gen IS something the source material tends to provide, while shippiness is often not, so the latter is in higher demand.

Back when I used to write fic, I once wrote was basically a gen fic, no sex or romance, just dealing with the complicated relationship between two characters. I got two very nice reviews. In contrast, my by-the-numbers smut fic was far more popular. Pairings will always rule. Sex is more exciting to most, as opposed to quiet character studies.
