(Anonymous) 2011-11-24 12:49 am (UTC)(link)I'm not saying that Shiina is the absolute bestest (admittedly, I find her singing voice off-putting at times), but she is miles better than other female arists on the charts.
There are loads of great artists over there that deserve mainstream popularity. Unfortunately Japanese people have shitty taste when it comes to music.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-24 12:53 am (UTC)(link)It's great that there's a couple of enka songs on there at least.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-24 01:36 am (UTC)(link)Actually, a lot of the single artist and smaller bands on this are nice to listen to as well. And I like the variety on the chart, something I wish we had more of here on our top 100.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-24 02:31 am (UTC)(link)I discovered this cute band Lamp the other day, but it kinda depends on whether or not you like the retro style:
Re: Lets start a rec thread!
Uh, this one's sung in french but the band's Japanese, I believe. I guess I'll just leave this here:
Re: Lets start a rec thread!
(Anonymous) 2011-11-24 09:48 am (UTC)(link)(btw you can D/L Lamp and other Asian jazz/soul/bossanova etc. at this blog: http://minipopcube.blogspot.com/)
I'm also a fan of EGO WRAPPIN who are a folk?/jazz group:
and Soil & Pimp Sessions which is essentially jazz on speed:
Their live shows are supposed to be awesome, and I'm dying to go.
Re: Lets start a rec thread!
I'm really liking the jazz/bossa nova fare you've linked even though I'm not too familiar with it. Although now that I think about it, it really shouldn't even be a surprise since I like Takako Minekawa (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57LboHngkn4) and Capsule (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6Yw07AKCiE)'s earlier stuff, which had that bossa nova rhythm to it.
I wish I could contribute more artists here but I'm lacking knowledge when it comes to the Japanese music industry. ;o; I could recommend... idk, Polysics (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzcT2XDg4Wg)? XD They seem very popular already. (Still pretty boss though!)

As for recs... Eek, I have a lot actually, so I'm not gonna embed anything.
Angela Aki's songs are really pretty, imo: I really like Tegami (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFJ8EFzywjw), and Funeral of Morals (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfeCorBQLvU).
Che-a seems pretty cool! I like Pandora (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XOo3b1Ndbk), and I need to find more of their songs.
Same with HEY-SMITH and Endless Sorrow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3K1cRNlKKb4)! They are punk if you like that sort of thing.
Again, BRAHMAN is one of those bands I really need to look up more of, but the sound and video of their song A WHITE DEEP MORNING (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Od0IQnBnHLY) is pretty awesome.
Chara has a really unique voice, imo, that I quite enjoy: I'd check out Taisetsu o Kizuku Mono (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezIr0XHUY6U) and Milk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1bTCIa89Dc) first from her, but that's probably because they're the first songs of hers I ever heard too. |D I also thought that Ōki na Jishin ga Kitatte (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vh5VTRhiEW8) was super cute.
I really love Cocco's voice, and I think she has some amazing songs. Nirai Kanai (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFqxf8xsjcc) has one of my favorite videos, not just of hers, but ever, and I love the sound of it.
RADWIMPS is just amazing. Like... everything they do is amazing; if there's one band in this list you should check out EVERY SONG of, it would be them. To get people started, I recommend Kanashi (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-P7ihFYwbAM), Order Made (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0Jdnkr8xRA), Yuushinron (Heart Theism) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnWx-28rNUc) (though the lyrics to that one get a trigger warning for suicide), and Oshakashama (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SU0oHJo18iw) (you have to turn on the subtitles for this one).
And last, just... my favorite band at the moment is called amazarashi. There are three songs by them that I recommend to EVERYBODY EVER because damn. I love their sound, but the latter two of these videos are probably the best things I have ever seen. In order:
1. Hikari, Saikou (Light, Reconsidered) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqJE_d0GGA4) (translation (http://www.jpopasia.com/lyrics/38409/amazarashi/hikari-saikou.html))
2. Christmas (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVG2qw4BkzI) (translation (http://lyricstranslate.com/en/christmas-%E3%82%AF%E3%83%AA%E3%82%B9%E3%83%9E%E3%82%B9-christmas.html))
3. anomie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aj2HHXxugMk) (translation (http://lyricstranslate.com/en/anomie-%E3%82%A2%E3%83%8E%E3%83%9F%E3%83%BC-anomie.html))
Aaaand I think that's it. I'm sorry, this is long as hell, I just have a lot of feelings about (especially under-appreciated) Japanese bands/artists. Especially those last four, damn.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-24 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)Also, it's REALLY aweome to see a mixed-race artist become so popular, especially in a uh...conservative? old-fashioned? genre of music.

Shiina Ringo's really good; I have a friend who LOVES her and I've heard some of her music because of that. However, I like my Japanese girl groups (AKB48, NMB48, Momoiro Clover Z, etc. etc.) because they're fun and tend not to take themselves too seriously. I don't like when music is "ultimate serious business" and I honestly don't care about vocal ability at all, so... yeah.

It's not like every country don't do the same shit. Although I kinda impressed that 2PM, a KPop band, is doing that well. I knew the Halleyu wave was strong in Japan, but that not strong.

It's not just a Japanese thing, and there are a lot of talented acts out there that are mainstream, including Shiina Ringo. The balance of talent vs. bubblegum is not much different than in the West, it's just that Japanese trashy pop is in a different style than Western trashy pop.
