Well, so much for exposing myself as not being from the US ;)

Oh there's plenty of people around here who do it wrong too. One on my econ professors even. Drove me crazy in his class.

not everywhere.

*$199 (dollar sign comes first) in the US, and the internet is clearly US-centric, so please stop showing how you're not from the US, it confuses us Americans.

Fixed that for you.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
While I assume the first anon is from the US, isn't it usually the convention in predominantly English-speaking countries to put the currency sign first? I honestly don't know, but I don't think that anon was trying to show how US-centric Americans online are. And even if they were, you come off like an ass.

A lot of Americans don't realize that people do money signs that way b/c they've never had to see it before. They've never traveled internationally or had their language teachers teach it to them, where is where I learned it but a lot of my friends didn't. Why the hell would we have to learn it anyway? We're a very large country, which has a unified money system. We're not a tiny country surrounded by other tiny countries with different money systems to learn about. I'm sick of the whole anti-American prejudice even from other Americans. God, I get so tired of assholes like you.

No, wait. /It's a US dollar sign, so it's not US-centric to stick it where it's supposed to go by US-custom/. Had the poster expressed the money in euros or some other format that has the money sign come second, then, yes, it would be US-centric to demand that it be stuck in front. But if we're dealing with something - in this case, a monetary system - that is /based in the US/, then yes, it does make perfect sense to have it follow US standards.
... not that it wasn't asshole-ish to correct it in the first place. It was just also asshole-ish to be all anti-US about it. :)

This movie looks so strange and creepy, like uncanny valley territory.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-24 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
The screencaps and pics look much more uncanny vallier than the actual movie.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-24 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I saw a commercial the other day and it's definitely not as bad as the pics... buuut it still feels kind of wishy-washy, like they couldn't decide if they wanted live-action or a cartoon. I wish they'd just gone with one or the other.

[identity profile] ook.livejournal.com 2011-11-24 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I was saying this when I was only looking at the stills from the film, but now that I've seen the Tintin movie where the characters are moving and talking, I've changed my opinion. The CGI versions of the Tintin comic book characters look really good! And I've been a huge fan of Herge's comics since I was a kid.

I was really surprised at, and particularly impressed with, the film versions of Haddock, Madame Castafiore and the villain Ivan Sakharine. Tintin and Snowy looked really good too. I got a kick out of seeing the Herge comics characters rendered in 3-D, like they were "real" people. The film's action sequences are brilliant and the story is fast-paced. I have to admit that Herge (if he were still alive) would love Spielberg's film version of the Tintin universe.

As another childhood fan of Tintin who's had some reservations but also some cautious optimism about the movie, I appreciate hearing your opinion on the film. I mean, I know I'll be sure to see it either way, but this gives me more hope for it.

OP here

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
As someone said: The first trailer looked really creepy, but the actual movie isn't uncanny-valley creepy at all :) I was worried about that before watching it, but I can assure you, it's absolutely fine once you see it.

[identity profile] shadowpiranha.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Haddock was brilliant and I think it's more due to Andy Serkis being a fucking genius than anything else. I really loved the character.

[identity profile] nemo-de-la-meer.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I have a huge crush on Henk Poort when he plays Capt. Haddock in the musical of Tintin.

I also had a huge crush on the animated Haddock.

Not sure if I'm digging Andy Serkis, but I'll probably crush on that too.

Good Lord, his head looks huge.

[identity profile] joshua-glass.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Compared to his hands, which look tiny. XD I feel bad that that's what I focused on instead of the secret's content.

OP here

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
It's only in the picture ;) His head is totally fine in the movie XD

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Tintin secrets and I can't believe most of the comments on this one have people arguing about the placement of the dollar sign... Anyway, I loved Haddock in the new movie. IMO he's one of the best animated characters in years! I never pictured him with a Scottish accent when I read the comics, but now I can't picture him without it.

[identity profile] acksed.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
It's the nose. Chicks dig the nose.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-27 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Tintin fan here, don't worry about the movie being rubbish or anything. It's quite the opposite. Been reading the stories since I was a wee one and the movie was absolutely beautiful. I couldn't have asked for anything else.
And yes, Haddock... I think it's the accent.

Well, I think Daniel Craig does that voice, he is a very sexy man. So it's not that odd.
