OP, it was the Martha Stans who really drummed in the Rose/Doctor hate, and it sort of went on from there and grew and grew into this behemoth of hatred towards the pairing in large pockets of fandom, when at the time when season 2 was airing, people weren't so vocal at all.

But you know, Haters Gon' Hate.

THAT scene is a constant tearjerker :(

I always thought it was the Classic Who fans who fuelled the most Rose!hate coz of how she was overshadowing the older companions or something. I'm mostly going by that ridiculous fanart everyone kept posting a while back of Rose standing beside all the older companions and complaining about thinking she was special. :(

Strange how I can't remember her being like that in the show.

SOME Classic fans didn't like her because of the romance element, but tbh all of MY old friends in the Who fandom IRL and online were also major major Classic fans too, just like I was, and they all LOVED Rose.

It was a few Classic fans during Rose's time who moaned, and after it was usually Martha stans. I say stans rather than fans because THEY STANNED MARTHA SO HARD.

Companions come and go as Regenerations do really. People need to understand that.

Ugh, that fanart is the worst. I mean, has Rose watched Classic Who? No. She has not.

So how would she know about the older companions? All she knows is what the Doctor told her. And what the Doctor told her was WAAAAH EVERYONE I KNOW IS DEAD, I'M ALL ALONE IN THE UNIVERSE, PLEASE DON'T EVER LEAVE ME ROES.

Not to mention that Sarah Jane was just as jealous and patronizing towards Rose and yet, for some reason, Rose is the bad guy in that episode.

YES. But it's okay, because she knew the Doctor first! But at the same time it's NOT okay when Rose says she knew the Doctor before Martha.

And Rose isn't the first companion to be jealous because someone else knew the Doctor before her. In the story Battlefield; Ace became really possessive of the Doctor and bitterly jealous towards the Brigadier when she met him and saw how close he and the Doctor were.

And yet Ace is remembered as a fan favourite. Or maybe it's okay when the jealousy isn't romantic. That makes sense. -_-

Rose and Martha just needed to have a sleepover in the TARDIS during the whole "towing the earth home" thing in JE. They'd just complement each other on how awesome they are and lament Ten's emotional failings.

I loved that Sontaran episode where Martha and Donna met up, and they struck up a friendship almost right away, and you could see the Doctor in the background thinking "Not sure if want..."

I think it depends. I've seen a lot of classic Who fans bash on Rose. However, I know a Classic Who fan who just was watching New Who for the first time and he definitely thought that Doomsday was REALLY sad.

Hahaha yeah, it's a closed circle! Some Rose stans had a kneejerk reaction to Martha, so Martha stans decided both Rose and her stans are horrible people. So Rose stans started to defend themselves. And now we're in like a neverending war.

I was a Rose fan, but I get that companions come and go, so I was ok with her leaving, given the epicness of it... and then Martha came along and I didn't like Freema's wooden acting or Martha's annoying pining over/fancying of the Doctor because frankly it came off as so so desperate and ruined the character, but I was willing to give her a chance.

Then the SECOND I start warming to her and accepting her, a few eps in, the hardcore Martha stans start seriously hating on Rose and Rose fans, so I get offended, and go from disliking Martha to HATING MARTHA in some kind of retaliation and response.

Like you say... neverending war and vicious circle!!

Thankfully then Catherine Tate happened, and everything settled down a bit. Though never completely.

It's kind of funny you say that because I've been watching some of the early Master episodes like Mind of Evil and Claws of Axos and there's moments were the Doctor and the Master work together and...it's like he's more of a companion than Jo is in those stories! ^_^

But personally Doctor/TARDIS is my OTP.

It really is! I love the subtext between Three/Delgado!Master almost as much as between Ten/Simm!Master. Maybe because Jon and Roger were such close friends in real life that their chemistry is gold but I also love how back then the Master is all; "Join me, Doctor. Let's rule the universe together!" and Three, just for a moment, looks tempted. And then 40 odd years later when it's Ten asking the Master to join him and travel with him, Master's all like; "...Fuck you."

Damn, I don't contribute nearly as much to this ship as I should. Might make a fanvid to remedy that soon. In the meantime, I love this;

It's shocking just how much everything is copying Classic Who!!

I feel for JR, I really do. All that time and effort writing her first manuscript, only to find that damn... Master is too nice and doesn't want to take over the world, Rani is too sensitive and cares about her friends. QUICK. RENAME THEM AND MAKE THIS NOT ABOUT OUTER SPACE.

Her Classic Who characterisation errors obviously worked out well for her financially though, so good for her.

Right I'm just gonna go through all my Harry Potter books now and replace the words Harry, Ron, Hermione, Hogwarts, Dumbledor, Voldemort with Doctor, Master, Rani, Prydonian Academy, Old Hermit Guy in Planet of the Spiders and Rassilon. And obviously just change all the magic lessons to...I dunno, time-ology or whatever.

Then we'll have cracked JK's master code! Pun not intended.
