No I know, I adore her. But the reasoning for her being on the bridge were so random at times, sometimes she didn't even speak at all but was there simply to be eye candy. And she has like, zero character development. BUT I LOVE HER I wish they'd done so much more with her. I think she had a lot of potential.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Her role on the bridge wasn't therapist, it was empath -- she helped by reading the feelings of the aliens they encountered, limiting misunderstandings and helping to detect hostile intentions.

People hate TROI? WAT. That's like hating kittens!

Wait, people hate Deanna? I rather like her. It's Data I can't stand. Don't hurt me, people.

Deanna love <3 I adore her too! She's the kind of person I'd love to be friends with.
The problem is that the show often didn't know what to do with her. Having her on the bridge at all times was preposterous. I'm glad they showed more of her job as a therapist later in the series and how fulfilling (and challenging!) it was for her. But I would have loved to see them do more with her as the show went on, say, be a full-time ambassador (who better to deal with new species than an empath?) or in charge of first contacts. Thankfully, there is fic :) But yeah, Deanna is wonderful! :D And I was so happy when they finally let her wear science blue!

Good thing I never stepped a foot in the fandom. I love her! She's so sweet and her voice is really soothing.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
See, that's exactly my problem with her in the show: character is fine (not my favourite, but fine), but not in the way they used her. More often than not, her input on the bridge was useless, along the lines of "I sense that this man who has been shouting at you is a bit tense." They should've used the character differently.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
She would have been more tolerable if she didn't sleep with EVERY SINGLE ALIEN, usually being manipulated in the process, plus the Worf ship thing was utter drivel.
Also her actress was kinda poor at emotional scenes, especially crying.
They gave her really crappy plots so Troi was just.. p useless and annoying because how many times can her 'feelings' not detect she's being played by sleazy alien man of the week?

I didn't hate her as a kid watching TNG but she was never one of my favorite characters in the ST lineup. Outside of DS9 she's prob my least favorite female character throughout the series.

Aww, I sure don't hate her. I have to admit, Deanna-centric episodes usually bores me to death, and she's not one of my favorites, but she's adorable.

Charter member of the GET THE EMPATH OFF THE BRIDGE club, here. I can accept that she could've been an interesting character. As a feature character in medical, I think she'd've been great. But from the pilot on, I think it was clear they had no idea how to handle the on-the-bridge idea, much less her role in either negotiation or contact - much less combat - situations.

And that's partly because if she's as good as they set her up to be, it'd short-circuit too many plots, and I think they figured that out really early, but not early enough to change her role.

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
For what it's worth, I like her as a character - her main problem was that the writers had no freaking clue what to do with her, and if her empathic abilities had been used intelligently they'd have derailed half of the plots ("He's not only lying, sir, he appears to be controlled by an alien intelligence; I'm detecting feelings not even Betazoids have names for"), so they never used her well even as a plot device.

Yeah, I was kinda saddened when I found out how much she was hated in fandom. ^^ Cause growing up with TNG, she and Beverly were my favorite female characters on tv at the time. I loved her and her flaws. I always hated the Worf thing and glad they kinda did away with it when he moved to DS9 and in the movies, but that was minor to the rest of her. So you're not alone!

[identity profile] lule-bell.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I've always loved her! There were definitely problems with character development and I don't think writers or directors knew what to do with her half the time, but she's still my favourite.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
The problem was her entire job was just to state the obvious so even the thickest viewer could follow what was laughingly called the plot.

scene:bridge int
Alien of the week: Blah, blah, blah, blah, I'm so shifty even Arthur fucking Daly looks legit next to me, blah, blah, blah.

Troi: Captain he's hiding something.

Picard: No fucking shit, if I didn't want to motorboat those tits of yours I'd throw out the airlock. Now just sit down and look pretty.

Troi: Okay I'll sit here

Picard: No not there, that's the helm, get the fuck out of there before you ram us into a planet.

I liked Troi too. Hell, I can't think of any ST:TNG character that I hated. And yes, that includes Wesley lol.

In the first few seasons, I was totally in with the Troi-hate.

But after they made her a bridge officer (the ep where she takes/passes the test? FAVORITE TROI EP EVER), gave her character/professional development besides stating the obvious, it made more sense that they'd have her on the bridge -- she could take over the helm or what-have-you if someone got fried, so why not have her there instead of some random Ensign Backup? It beats having to come up with an excuse later to get her on a line-of-sight to the suspicious dude ("Hey, we're just calling back so our Empath can see you and tell us if you're lying."). I also liked how after they made her a command officer, they also gave her the "What the Hell, Hero?" job.

But the thing with Worf was lame. Worf/Dax was much, much better-handled.

I liked her more in First Contact than any point in the show, to be honest, but that whole bit was just too adorable. ("And DON'T YOU CRITICIZE my counseling techniques!")

The only hate I've ever seen for her has been regarding the movies. And it makes sense considering how much they butchered her likeable character.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
She's kind of meh--I like her okay but I agree w/everyone stating that they didn't know what to do w/her role. I did like Riker/Troi. TBPH, I watched every ep and movie of NG and I'm meh about the series as a whole. I did like certain characters and story lines though; I just never bought the whole crew as friends who cared for/would die for each other like I did in TOS.

[identity profile] ryttu3k.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
People hate Troi? :( Damn, that's disappointing to hear - I'm not involved in fandom because I'm still working my way through the series (just one season left!), but I like her.

I LOVED her! She was a great character anyway (and I attribute a lot of that to Marina Sirtis), but they could have done so much more with her and the writers really dropped the ball. She's delightful, though.

[identity profile] minervention.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
I love Troi, and I don't give a shit whether she SHOULD be on the bridge or not. She was on it and that's that. Besides, mental and emotional stability on a ship like the Enterprise should be one of the top priorities. Why shouldn't she be in close contact with the people in charge?

[identity profile] pet-lunatic.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 08:55 am (UTC)(link)
I don't hate her. If they'd utilised her properly, she could have been an extremely interesting and very powerful character...as it was, they claimed she had all sorts of qualifications in psychology as well as her empathic abilities, both of which she only ever appeared to use for stating the blindingly obvious and for the kind of counselling which you normally see from people who have their name written in felt-tip on a bit of paper taped to their door.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-28 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
I hated that she was the babe-in-space sort of role and was limited to that for so long. Just be there, look pretty, get ogled/kidnapped/melodramatically weepy as the plot calls for it and have the psychic powers because 'The Chick' always gets a mental ability if there are abilities to be had. Not the character's fault she got stuck like that nearly the whole show long.
