I thought it was canon that none of them aged...? Otherwise, Chip would be an adult. He was ten-ish when the curse hit and he's still a kid at the end when the curse is lifted. They've been frozen in time for ten years.

[identity profile] foxhound.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but didn't the intro say that the spell had been cast eight years ago or something? And that he had until his twenty-first birthday to find love? He was very close to his birthday, meaning even if he didn't physically age, he was alive for twenty-one years. If the spell was eight years ago, it was cast when he was thirteen.

This.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
This; he had a specific timeline to follow to find love before the spell was permanent.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
yep

[identity profile] mirai-gohan.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
...huh. In that case, the comment above about Chip has me thinking that maybe Chip was just a toddler with the curse hit and he's a kid now? Which also has me wondering how he would deal with being human again, since by that logic, he's spent most of his life as, y'know, a sentient teacup. That has GOT to be weird.

I'm rambling, but I'm trying to make sense of this now. Maybe Disney was just throwing plotholes around in the hopes that nobody would notice. >_>

[identity profile] silver-rose86.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Consider this, that the servants didn't age but the Beast was allowed to. Afterall, they only got proverbial death by association so it wouldn't be fair at all for them to lose ten years of their lives because their master was a prick.

[identity profile] mirai-gohan.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
That makes sense too. Though I'm not sure what would be worse--spending ten years of your life as a teacup or being stuck as a little-kid-teacup for ten years. Either way, it's not pleasant. o_o

[identity profile] immasammich.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
He actually does look younger in the sequel flashback, but I hate that thing so let's ignore it anyway.

But yeah, this is pretty much how I feel. People spend all this time trying to figure out the math behind it, but since I was little I always just thought they all stopped aging. I'm fairly certain there's something in the original fairy tale about time not passing in the castle too. Like it's winter outside, but spring in the castle. An early version of the movie apparently had the same thing going.

So I'm totally with you on this one. He does not look any younger in his portrait, therefore he stopped aging. End of story.

Huh. Good point. Hadn't considered that before.

The portrait changed though. I mean, it changed when he became human, so I think it could change as he aged.

[identity profile] immasammich.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
What? When did the portrait change? I'm quite sure I don't remember that, so you'll have to point it out to me if you can.

Anyway, I present to you the prologue, where he does not look like a child in neither the stain glass windows nor the portrait: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__x8CYAVMbk (You could argue that he didn't rip the portrait until recently, but the rose is still closed in that scene.)

I just really have no idea where people are getting this stuff from. I guess it's just the little leftovers in the song lyrics from Howard Ashman (who actually did want the prince to be a child when cursed) and taking those too literally. But he really can't be any younger than a late teen in those flashbacks.

Sorry, if I'm a little long-winded on this point. This debate in particular is just a thing with me. It just seemed so obvious to me forever and I can't understand the other side at all.
meadowphoenix: (Default)

So this also got long-winded

[personal profile] meadowphoenix 2011-11-26 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I think the portrait is ambiguous. They deliberately gave him rounded cheeks and wide eyes, which are very childhood markers. But they also gave him a strong chin and broad shoulders. I think the most you could get from the portrait is teenager past puberty. He could arguably look 13 or 17. I think what would throw most people off is the long hair. Long hair makes kids look much older. Cut off his hair in that picture and he deages suddenly. I would also point to the wide eyes particularly, because they are only for children. Not even older teenagers, but literally children. They more than anything make me think that he wasn't meant to be an older teen. I agree that he doesn't look like a child in the stain glass windows, however. The portrait doesn't change, that's my mistake. The stained glass does from the prince, to the prince and Belle.

My problem with the argument in either direction is that all the clues you may used to time the sequences are mere narrative devices. The rose you mentioned hadn't opened yet, because they need to show it was magical. They say it's the same rose from the witch, but the rose in the stained glass has clearly already bloomed. The portrait needed to look as close to the prince at the end as possible (though somewhat changed), so that you are reinforced that they are the same person. The stained glass is a study of power proportions. At first he's taller than the old woman, but then there is the reverse. He's taller and bigger than everyone in the stained glass of him alone. I do think 21st year, means his birthday since that would be odd as a magical number for the actual length of a spell (also, they probably want him the sage "age" as Belle). I wouldn't count out the lyrics because they supposed to be exposition. You're supposed to take them seriously. But ultimately, I think the witch was kinda horrible either way.

I could have written this.

It would have been a pretty dick move if the fairy put a curse on him when he was that young, even if he was acting like a spoiled brat. If he was older I can see the justification in letting him learn a lesson. W/E I still hate the guy.

[identity profile] tasogare-n-hime.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I always thought Lumiere was just exaggerating, I mean it's only one line in a song, and the painting of the prince looked older than 10-13. He looked older than that in the sequel flash back too.

[identity profile] nabradia.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, seriously. Unless cups and things can reproduce, anyway. Pffffft.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
The math always drives me nuts.

"21st year" could mean one of two things, and neither work-

1. The year he turns 21. In which case the fairy cursed an 11 year old boy who managed to look like an adult in the stained glass window and the portrait.

2. 21 years of being cursed, where everybody stops aging. But Lumiere distinctly says that they have been waiting for a decade ("Ten years we've been rusting"), but the 21st year occurs shortly after.

The only other option is a variation on B, where they have had a few visitors during the curse and the last one was ten years earlier. But I doubt somebody leaving wouldn't have brought attention to the ENCHANTED CASTLE (and they could have convinced *somebody* to check it out), and if the Beast starved people to death... well, that's not exactly Disney hero-like.

[identity profile] mirai-gohan.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
That second one makes the most sense to me. Thanks for bringing it up, because this thread was confusing the hell out of me.

[identity profile] dragonimp.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Problem is the curse specifically says he has until his "twenty-first birthday", and if he stopped aging then that doesn't really make sense. Add that to the "ten years we've been rusting" line and you get an 11-year-old boy (pretty bitchy enchantress to curse an 11-year-old boy for being a snot). But then, this is also the movie that went through 3 seasons in about a week. This used to drive me nuts as a kid.

[identity profile] biancas-beau.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I think there's some continuity errors in the movie that cause the confusion...but the age-freezing makes way more sense to me.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed; they probably wrote the song while the rest of the story was still being detailed, or chose the word "ten" because it was one syllable and fit lyrically. I wouldn't put a huge amount of stock in the musical numbers being gospel.

[identity profile] otakugal15.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe the stain glass windows were meant to show him older, to exaggerate? Can't explain the painting though...

Oh Disney. I love this movie, but you guys REALLY did a number on his age...

[identity profile] kryptoncat.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Would Chip have lived longer in his teacup body than his real body? Would he have remembered how to use his hands or walk at the end of the movie if he had really spent ten years as a teacup?
