Some of the dogpiling is ridiculous, when it's over something pedantic like blond vs. blonde. But I actually like that the comm as a whole has grown and changed so it doesn't allow bigotry and shaming. A lot of the time, when I see people complaining about ffrants or F!S or stupid_free, it's because they said something offensive, and continually failed to grasp it was offensive, even when multiple people had explained to them why it was offensive. Then it just becomes "those damn social justice warriors, ruining the fun", with all sorts of "next they'll be telling me that it's offensive to say [insert random example here] hurrhurrhurr" and all sorts of other attempts to ridicule the people who called them out as being ~too sensitive~. I don't know, I just think a lot of people seem to think that being called out on being offensive is somehow stepping on their rights to say offensive shit wherever they want, and their right to be offensive (~free speech~) is more important than not actively offending other people.

blond/blonde is not pedantic. It's proper fucking grammar. You write about a blonde man and I'm instantly pulled from the story. FFS.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt

You are the problem. FFS.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
What's wrong with being grammatically correct?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
If that's all it takes to get you riled up and throw you out of the story, you have problems. One extra letter does not make the word incomprehensible. It doesn't make the sentence or the entire story suddenly bad. Get over yourself.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
then why are there so many fucking rants at ffrants over this very stupid little bullshit issue?

I don't think the problem is the dogpiles, I think the problem is ranters who talk out of their ass, TROLL fanfic sites for something to bitch about and blow little bullshit issues in fanfic all out of proportion just so they can get their pathetic 15 minutes of fame in ffrants.

[identity profile] lemon-m.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
THAT takes you out of the story?

Pal...

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
If a slight misspelling is enough to get you this mad, you need to take a deep breath and calm the fuck down.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, grammar prescriptivism.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Not here, no. Grammar prescriptivism would be insisting on the use of [insert grammar rule that is slowly fading out of existence], not insisting on following through with grammar rules that ARE still in existence and not likely to fade out of it soon. "Blonde" is female. "Blond" is male.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Considering I was always taught to use 'blonde' in any circumstance in third grade otherwise I'd be counted down for misspelling, and no one has ever corrected me since, I'd say the rule is falling into obscurity. I didn't even know there was a different term for 'brunette' when it applied to males until I started writing fanfiction about six months ago, and someone pointed it out to me. Deal with it.

[identity profile] nyxelestia.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
...there's a different term for brunettes when applied to males?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-27 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Apparently yes. I was told it's 'brunet' after I mistakenly used 'brunette' to refer to a male character (not the best descriptor in the world, but it was what I came up with that fit at the time).

[identity profile] nyxelestia.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh.

...do they sound the same? That's the biggest thing that confuses me when it comes to the blond/blonde thing - they both sound the same so why bother with two different spellings, anyway?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-27 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Yes, I think they are pronounced the same (I am not 100% on that as I didn't even know it was a word until recently), which makes this 'rule' even more ridiculous to me.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-27 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
You've got it wrong. In English, blonde is a noun and blond is a verb.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-28 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Augh, I hate this fucking rule! At this rate I'm ready to say fuck it and only refer to hair colors using things with similar coloration like dead grass and horse shit.

[identity profile] nyxelestia.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Most gendered-language rules make no sense to me. Why bother differentiating between "waiter" and "waitress"? Or "actor" and "actress"? I mean, it's not as if waiter/actor specifically mean male, they're considered a linguistic default (-er/-or just mean 'someone who does...' not 'man who does...'), and the -ess ending is a specifically feminine deviation. Ugh. To be honest most of the time I just say "waiter/actor/ect." anyway, regardless of gender. As far as I know most people don't notice.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-28 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

I'm the same way. I've never much liked having a distinction between male and female with descriptors because, at least in the examples you gave (waiter/waitress, actor/actress), I feel that it unnecessarily singles out women in those professions. To me it seems like people were uncomfortable referring to these women by the given term for the profession as it was only used previously to refer to men and thus a new term was made to draw a line between men and women. I can't think of one that works the other way to single out men in a given profession at the moment, but I'm sure they're out there, and that irritates me too. No one deserves to be singled out for their sex/gender. It's all so stupid to me.

Oh, and for the record

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not the anon you replied to. I forgot to mention that in my other comment.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Why on earth does hair color need to be gendered? Blonde is the same fucking thing as blond. Also, English =/= French. Goodness. If only I knew the equivalent of "take that big stick out of your ass" in French...

it's because they said something offensive, and continually failed to grasp it was offensive, even when multiple people had explained to them why it was offensive.

THIS.

ridicule the people who called them out as being ~too sensitive~
I especially love how the people that were offended are "too sensitive" but it's totally okay for the OP to whine that people are being meannnnnn to them or that it's totally offensive for people to call the OP assholes.
