I'm actually really glad to hear that because I'm in the middle of a sort of body-swap fic (the guy gets sort of rebuilt using a woman's body as a template; he becomes (externally, at least) female himself.

But because it's the same personality in there, and that personality is male, I've been referring to him with masculine pronouns, which is leading to lines like "He really did have great boobs" sorts of things. Which is, I think, much funnier than saying "she" there; but it also made more sense to me. But I wasn't sure if it might be weird for others.

So I'm glad to read this, because it makes me just that wee bit more confident about saying "He" regardless of external configurations.

yeah, the warriors for social justice will love that the fic exists for great justice, but every single reader will backspace after two paragraphs of that max. I look forward to reading your ranty message on [livejournal.com profile] fanficrants about all the reviewers pointing it out and how you think they are all cunts.

Every single reader? Nah, probably only the readers as dumb as you.

I think the way kryss_labryn puts it just makes more sense.

for . . . real? really? really real? genderswap is my kink and the best stories almost universally keep the proper pronouns. In fact, I've found switching pronouns is a good indicator that there's going to be a HOT TOPIC BRA SHOPPING TRIP!!!! at some point in the fic.

*sporfle* Thanks, now I have hot chocolate on my keyboard.

...is it just me, or do a lot of those stories also peter out after the HOT TOPIC BRA SHOPPING TRIP!!!! ?

Yes, yes, yes, all very correct and carrying an important social message I'm sure, here's your goddamn gold star well done. Now, I'll go read something that's actually fun instead though.

The worst, driest, worthy stories keep the pronouns to be oh-so correct. The fun ones to read switch them for ease, and you know what. A bra-buying scene can actually be pretty damn funny to read and write. Especially if it's followed up with a sudden onset crush on their former best friend who is now suddenly the opposite sex. A "date" instead of just hanging out is a pretty sweet read too. Of course it doesn't hold a candle to page, after page, after page, of tortured angst about real world trans-issues.

Take a look at real world books, fun reads are always much more popular than those social award winning ones that tackle Big Issues In A Realistic Manner. Same applies in fanfic, yeah, you think you should be politically correct, knock yourself out patting yourself on the back at being so prim and proper. Won't change that most of the readership think you are a dipshit, and will back button out of there for something more fun that doesn't preach at them. You've forgotten fandom is about having fun, a common disease these days.

Are you one of those people who thinks gender-bending must always be presented as hilarious? Ranma 1/2 is a comedy, obviously, but it's very well-established that the titular character thinks of his condition as a curse.

I wish I could edit comments.

Also, a fanfic that retains the proper pronouns doesn't have to be dull and angst-ridden. You can treat the situation in a lighthearted manner. You seem to be have some strange association with fanfics that don't take gender identity seriously (that they are always joyfully comedic) and the ones that do (that they must be written for no reason except to educate the reader).

What the fuck are you rambling about. I read genderswap because I like porn, and because I like nipple play. If a genderswap fic doesn't have a sex scene in it, unless it's like AMAZINGLY WRITTEN, I tend to get bored with it. I also have a mile-wide forced feminization kink so if a HOT TOPIC BRA SHOPPING TRIP should be enjoyable to anyone, it would be me, but a HOT TOPIC BRA SHOPPING TRIP is not written to be enjoyable to ANYONE but the person who is writing it, much like Mary Sues.

Actually, that would be my biggest statement about the swapping the pronouns fics. The fics that switch pronouns TEND TO (not always, Bizarrely Defensive About This Issue Anon, it's just what i've noticed is a trend!) make the genderswapped character into their Mary Sue, it's like they make them a new character, almost. Sometimes they even have them get a brand new girl name to go with their girl body! Which I don't like, because it's less like genderswap and more like A Fic About An OC Girly Girl. The appeal to me lies in a male character getting boobs. This has nothing to with a fic being done in a Realistic Manner???? It's a trend I've noticed from reading years and years worth of this ridiculous trope.

Man this is literally the craziest reaction I've ever gotten on this comm.
