I think fanfic authors do it because it's just easier to establish when Ramna is in "girl form" or "boy form" by using gender-specific pronouns. In the manga and anime, you can actually see what form he's in, so the characters around him just call Ranma "him" regardless. You can't really do that in fanfiction- well, okay, I suppose you could do it with a great degree of attention and care, but I don't really blame any authors who refer to girl-Ranma as "she" for simplicities' sake.

Yeah, came here to say this. In any gender-changing characters/plots, I always lose track when they are constantly refered to (in the writing, not in dialogue) by their actual gender.

Same as this. It's different in art, manga or animation because you can actually show that the character has turned female (and even then, the anime gave "her" a different hair color to make it more obvious). In fan fiction though, the pronouns help keep it established which gender the character is presently in.

IIRC, Viz's manga translations did have girl!Ranma referred to with female pronouns, thought I read them a long time ago so don't take my word for it. Though, yeah, no matter what genitals he has Ranma is a guy and should be referred to as such.

Japanese doesn't need to use pronouns as often as English, so it probably wasn't that the translator switched male pronouns to female ones, it was that they just didn't have any pronouns to translate and had to choose one to go with in English.

I'm actually really glad to hear that because I'm in the middle of a sort of body-swap fic (the guy gets sort of rebuilt using a woman's body as a template; he becomes (externally, at least) female himself.

But because it's the same personality in there, and that personality is male, I've been referring to him with masculine pronouns, which is leading to lines like "He really did have great boobs" sorts of things. Which is, I think, much funnier than saying "she" there; but it also made more sense to me. But I wasn't sure if it might be weird for others.

So I'm glad to read this, because it makes me just that wee bit more confident about saying "He" regardless of external configurations.

for . . . real? really? really real? genderswap is my kink and the best stories almost universally keep the proper pronouns. In fact, I've found switching pronouns is a good indicator that there's going to be a HOT TOPIC BRA SHOPPING TRIP!!!! at some point in the fic.
