Well, actually, the concept of "heaven" just made death more terrifying to me as a kid. Because it introduced me to the idea of eternity, and I didn't want to think about my life (well, afterlife) lasting FOREVER. It really freaked me out, but when I realized that a lot of people don't believe in an afterlife and that your life is finite and when you are dead you simply cease to exist, that made me feel a lot better. So yeah, I don't really think that's the reason this concept exists. (Newsflash: Kids aren't morons and children are individuals who are all different)

That was unnecesarily snarky.

Well, the way people patronize children really bothers me. It bothered me when I was a kid (especially when people used a different tone of voice to talk to me than they did to an adult) and it bothers me now. Children are people and deserved to be talked to like people, not talked down to.

I know I've mentioned it before, but I'm going to say again that it makes me really happy when other people feel this way about the concept of "heaven."

I always thought the popularity of the concept of heaven was a twofold sort of thing - to a lot of people, "nothing" is scarier than "something," so there's that. And additionally, I think religion always got a big pull from the relationship between rich people and poor people throughout history - the impoverished have a sense of hope because they're constantly being promised that things will improve in a "next life," so they hang on to that hope because it's about all they've got, and it keeps them from rising up against the wealthy because if they were to rise up in that manner they have the threat of getting the "next life" rewards yanked out from under them. Everybody wins.

Well, I don't have a problem with the fact that people believe in an afterlife and Heaven. But what I do have a problem with is the way it sometimes affects behavior, for instance, when people ignore real life issues because they're so focused on an afterlife (and don't get me started on the whole idea of "the End Times" that certain religious people use to justify their disregard for the environment and certain world conflicts)

I'm not even an atheist, LOL

[identity profile] leafing.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Regardless of your spiritual beliefs, it still makes me glad to know that the idea of carrying on as you are through eternity creeps other people out, too.

The whole "apocalypse" thing is troublesome in so many ways. We've seen it happen so many times, from the recent Harold Camping fiasco to that one woman who said that she had a chip in her brain that aliens communicated to her with who said that an alien planet would crash into earth and destroy it and advised people to kill their pets - and they did. And while people should probably not be so gullible, it's really very inappropriate for people to get their apocalypse boner on and start telling people to do things that they're going to regret, and even just scaring them like that. So inappropriate.

Fortunately it does seem that things like environmental protection are gaining mainstream popularity, so that's something.

I don't know which is more condescending: the implication that poor people are gullible idiots who can't think for themselves and see they're being exploited, or the popular idea of religion as a distraction for people who can't bear the weight of the world.

Ahh so glad I'm not the only one who had eternity angst as a child. I also had Infinity Angst, or something, when I heard about planets and stuff and asked my parents about space and my dad told me the universe went on forever, nonchalantly blowing my mind. I'd get stomachaches thinking about it, and to this day I have no idea WHY, and if I think about it long enough, I still feel that way.

I had this eternity problem as a child. I remember my mom comforted me by saying that a baby can't understand life as an old woman, so 'eternity' would make me cry like no doubt the complex steps you have to take to, say, file for social security would make a toddler cry. We are not ready for it now, it's entirely beyond us. What seems daunting and impossible and inconceivable now is something you will develop the skills and perspective to handle. She was like, you will always keep learning and adapting!

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
That's . . . pretty awesome, actually.

[identity profile] kryptoncat.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
That is an amazing and creative way to think about it!

[identity profile] starphotographs.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
I never liked the "heaven" afterlife concept, either. But I also sort of boggle at people who say that they'd never want to be immortal because it would get so boring to be alive forever. I... Must say I could never imagine that.

Then again, I seem to have a below-average capacity to feel boredom overall, so that's just my damage. I actually think it's really interesting how polarizing these concepts can be!
