Aww. I think that's kind of a sweet way to think about it.

Well, actually, the concept of "heaven" just made death more terrifying to me as a kid. Because it introduced me to the idea of eternity, and I didn't want to think about my life (well, afterlife) lasting FOREVER. It really freaked me out, but when I realized that a lot of people don't believe in an afterlife and that your life is finite and when you are dead you simply cease to exist, that made me feel a lot better. So yeah, I don't really think that's the reason this concept exists. (Newsflash: Kids aren't morons and children are individuals who are all different)

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
That was unnecesarily snarky.

Well, the way people patronize children really bothers me. It bothered me when I was a kid (especially when people used a different tone of voice to talk to me than they did to an adult) and it bothers me now. Children are people and deserved to be talked to like people, not talked down to.

[identity profile] leafing.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I know I've mentioned it before, but I'm going to say again that it makes me really happy when other people feel this way about the concept of "heaven."

I always thought the popularity of the concept of heaven was a twofold sort of thing - to a lot of people, "nothing" is scarier than "something," so there's that. And additionally, I think religion always got a big pull from the relationship between rich people and poor people throughout history - the impoverished have a sense of hope because they're constantly being promised that things will improve in a "next life," so they hang on to that hope because it's about all they've got, and it keeps them from rising up against the wealthy because if they were to rise up in that manner they have the threat of getting the "next life" rewards yanked out from under them. Everybody wins.
ext_81845: penelope, my art/character (your argument is boring me.)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I don't have a problem with the fact that people believe in an afterlife and Heaven. But what I do have a problem with is the way it sometimes affects behavior, for instance, when people ignore real life issues because they're so focused on an afterlife (and don't get me started on the whole idea of "the End Times" that certain religious people use to justify their disregard for the environment and certain world conflicts)

I'm not even an atheist, LOL

[identity profile] leafing.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Regardless of your spiritual beliefs, it still makes me glad to know that the idea of carrying on as you are through eternity creeps other people out, too.

The whole "apocalypse" thing is troublesome in so many ways. We've seen it happen so many times, from the recent Harold Camping fiasco to that one woman who said that she had a chip in her brain that aliens communicated to her with who said that an alien planet would crash into earth and destroy it and advised people to kill their pets - and they did. And while people should probably not be so gullible, it's really very inappropriate for people to get their apocalypse boner on and start telling people to do things that they're going to regret, and even just scaring them like that. So inappropriate.

Fortunately it does seem that things like environmental protection are gaining mainstream popularity, so that's something.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know which is more condescending: the implication that poor people are gullible idiots who can't think for themselves and see they're being exploited, or the popular idea of religion as a distraction for people who can't bear the weight of the world.

[identity profile] checkerblob.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Ahh so glad I'm not the only one who had eternity angst as a child. I also had Infinity Angst, or something, when I heard about planets and stuff and asked my parents about space and my dad told me the universe went on forever, nonchalantly blowing my mind. I'd get stomachaches thinking about it, and to this day I have no idea WHY, and if I think about it long enough, I still feel that way.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
I had this eternity problem as a child. I remember my mom comforted me by saying that a baby can't understand life as an old woman, so 'eternity' would make me cry like no doubt the complex steps you have to take to, say, file for social security would make a toddler cry. We are not ready for it now, it's entirely beyond us. What seems daunting and impossible and inconceivable now is something you will develop the skills and perspective to handle. She was like, you will always keep learning and adapting!

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
That's . . . pretty awesome, actually.

[identity profile] kryptoncat.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
That is an amazing and creative way to think about it!

[identity profile] starphotographs.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
I never liked the "heaven" afterlife concept, either. But I also sort of boggle at people who say that they'd never want to be immortal because it would get so boring to be alive forever. I... Must say I could never imagine that.

Then again, I seem to have a below-average capacity to feel boredom overall, so that's just my damage. I actually think it's really interesting how polarizing these concepts can be!

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
That's... definitely not where it came from, sorry.

[identity profile] emiliusredux.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, that's so sweet.

[identity profile] goobbledigook.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
And now we have to deal with religious fuckwits jizzing their pants about how we're going to hell because parents are too idiotic to properly educate their goddamn children?

[identity profile] xerxes92.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, if a child is under (about) the age of eight, they literally cannot understand the concept of death. Trying to educate their young children on death really isn't going to work because they're just too stupid to get it.

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Either that or by prophets as a carrot on a stick kind of deal to make their followers do what they say.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
well... yeah, actually, I think it probably DID work sort of like that, back when people were mostly primordial ooze and scared as shit about things like death. I mean, we have funerals ostensibly to carry people into the next life, but in reality, a funeral is just a way for the living to have closure and say goodbye. The concept of heaven probably evolved the same way: 1) my loved ones die, and I don't want them to be gone, so I believe they are still around in a place where I will eventually see them again/ I am afraid of dying and don't wish to think I will simply cease to be conscious; and/or 2) life sucks and there is nothing I can do to improve my lot, so the only thing that gives me hope is the idea that someday, things will be good-- even if that day is after I die.
And of course Hell is just a precautionary tale to keep people in line.

Human beliefs line up pretty clearly with their hopes, needs, and fears.

Anyway, as a kid I found more comfort in the idea that energy is never destroyed, so you literally DO hang around forever. Your loved ones will literally always be with you on Earth in some form or other :)

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
It sounds like you would be very interested in actually learning about this. Modern western culture is a bit of an odd dog, actually. Most cultures were and are quite comfortable with death. It was mourned and sad, of course, but it was an acknowledged a part of life, not something that you actively worked to shield your children from. You see so many self help books that talk about trying to explain death to children, but for a long time it was common to keep the dead body of a loved on in your home while mourners came to pay their respect, and children were commonly included in every aspect.

This idea of death as a mysterious tragedy, something that brushes up against your life only when something goes wrong, something that stops everything so everyone can reflect on the meaning of life. It's a pretty huge privilege that could only result from living in this time, in this culture. Where odds are that all of your siblings will survive to adulthood, that you won't have become accustomed to death before your fifth birthday.

I could have written this. :D It's an awesome thought, isn't it?

[identity profile] pet-lunatic.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 09:15 am (UTC)(link)
That may well be one of its functions, but unlike Santa, it doesn't stop with children. Maybe I'm just cynical, but I'm not sure imposing a belief system on children - especially if it involves the other side of the coin, terrifying them into good behaviour for fear of hell - is a good thing, when those beliefs are likely to influence and constrain their thinking for their entire lives.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with having spiritual beliefs; they have important psychological functions. And everybody is free to affiliate with a religion or develop their own pattern of beliefs if they choose - choose being the operative word. I feel that if people need a spiritual outlet, it's best to let them find it for themselves; otherwise, it's just a form of brainwashing.
