well... yeah, actually, I think it probably DID work sort of like that, back when people were mostly primordial ooze and scared as shit about things like death. I mean, we have funerals ostensibly to carry people into the next life, but in reality, a funeral is just a way for the living to have closure and say goodbye. The concept of heaven probably evolved the same way: 1) my loved ones die, and I don't want them to be gone, so I believe they are still around in a place where I will eventually see them again/ I am afraid of dying and don't wish to think I will simply cease to be conscious; and/or 2) life sucks and there is nothing I can do to improve my lot, so the only thing that gives me hope is the idea that someday, things will be good-- even if that day is after I die.
And of course Hell is just a precautionary tale to keep people in line.

Human beliefs line up pretty clearly with their hopes, needs, and fears.

Anyway, as a kid I found more comfort in the idea that energy is never destroyed, so you literally DO hang around forever. Your loved ones will literally always be with you on Earth in some form or other :)

It sounds like you would be very interested in actually learning about this. Modern western culture is a bit of an odd dog, actually. Most cultures were and are quite comfortable with death. It was mourned and sad, of course, but it was an acknowledged a part of life, not something that you actively worked to shield your children from. You see so many self help books that talk about trying to explain death to children, but for a long time it was common to keep the dead body of a loved on in your home while mourners came to pay their respect, and children were commonly included in every aspect.

This idea of death as a mysterious tragedy, something that brushes up against your life only when something goes wrong, something that stops everything so everyone can reflect on the meaning of life. It's a pretty huge privilege that could only result from living in this time, in this culture. Where odds are that all of your siblings will survive to adulthood, that you won't have become accustomed to death before your fifth birthday.

I could have written this. :D It's an awesome thought, isn't it?
