Please do take note of the disabled people explaining that yes, some disabled people actually are hurt by that word and don't like seeing it used.

Taking note, and laughing my ass off.

Hi Theo.

Nope, try again.

Though I'd love to see you pull this "he's just overreacting, I'm a real disabled person and real disabled people don't find little things like slurs offensive" routine to his face.

Nah, I'm afraid the realization that other disabled people out there don't get ragey over this insignificant BS would make his brain implode.

Hi, Theo. You can't make yourself more obvious if you DID sign in.

nayrt

do you mean like literally face to face as in real life (because that would be difficult)? Or just online, as in face to face with his Zachary Quinto icon?

Is this supposed to be intimidating or something? Like, what's the worst Theo could do? It's not like he could ban them if they aren't talking on fanficrants. Or is Theo also disabled and you're saying that he would take great offense?

Did you miss the English lesson where they taught what question marks are?

Oh no?

Seriously, what the hell is this comment? "Theo is offended by ableist language, therefore everyone else should be too, because Theo is the be-all-and-end-all of ableist language. You'd better not meet him face-to-face. He might get angry at you!!"

But is he strong enough to throw his wheelchair?

Re: How do you even cope in real life?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
So you're telling a disabled person that they should be offended because a handful of randoms on an LJ community are offended?

I'm handicapped too and if there's something that pisses me off more than anything it's when people go out of their way to not use words that reference disability. As if the only thing they see when they look at me is my disability.

I'd rather people use the word "lame" or "crippled" than go out of their way to censor their speech to the point where it feels like they're always thinking "shit, how can I word this so I don't upset the disabled girl?"

I recall the blind kid I used to hang out with when I was eleven. I was a bit upset when I realised I'd said "See you later" to him, but he just laughed it off :)

PREACH it, sister! The whole SJ thing (if it actually does spill over into real life) just makes that very problem so much more acute, doesn't it?

Me, I'm still shaking my head over the fact that "hard of hearing" and "hearing impaired" alternate on the hit list for "un-PC" every few years...I always preferred HoH (don't like "impaired" thanks), but apparently now the tide has turned?? *shrug*

GEORGE ORWELL WAS A PROPHET, YO. THESE ARE THE END TIMES, MAN. LOL.

But some disabled people can't speak for all disabled people. There are disabled people in that post saying it's NOT offensive to them. *shrug*

So what?

Even if he were literally the only disabled person in the world who felt hurt when people used the word (and he's not), how is it hurting you to at least try not to say it around him? Why go out of your way to deliberately offend someone?

Re: How do you even cope in real life?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-27 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the only disabled person in the world who is offended by the word "literally" and so that means YOU are the bigot! Yes, even though you just heard about it this moment and I'm the only one offended, this makes you the bigot.

Also, the word "orange" is offensive because I'm sure it refers to the color of my vomit.

If you try to use "orange" ever, even in reference to the fruit, you are a bigot.

Re: How do you even cope in real life?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-27 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Apples to grapes comparison, much?

There's a rather significant difference between things that are offensive to entire groups and things that are offensive to lone individuals. Similarly, there's a difference between common triggers which people can reasonably be expected to know they should warn for or avoid using and idiosyncratic personal triggers which people can't be expected to know about in advance but can choose to work around once they know it's an issue for the people they're communicating with.

Bigotry doesn't even enter into the picture, just basic decency. In a world where 'lame' wasn't currently still used for people with disabilities and was only regarded as hurtful by one person, it'd still be kind of shitty to use the word around that person after they've told you it hurts. Avoiding 'lame', or 'spastic', or 'bitchy' or whatever word you don't think is actually oppresive for the sake of someone on a comm you frequent (or or*nge for the sake of a probable troll) generally takes far less effort and will end in better moods all around than getting into a huge argument over it.

Those are the wrong crips and they need more midol. Maybe they're gang crips, they should put their colors in their icons.
