1. this is a book series set in a post-apocalyptic world where race is never specifically discussed, just alluded to occasionally by skin tone.
2. The skin tone of this character was never mentioned.
3. Them being not-white is "weird".
What's "weird" about not being white? I'm mystified. Does the book mention the skin tone of every single character of note? Because if so, then maybe it wasn't mentioned for this character so that they would deliberately be ambiguous. If not, then why does that automatically translate to EVERYONE MUST BE WHITE UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED? OP, did you maybe grow up somewhere where everyone around you was white? Cause not everyone does. I live in New York City, where only about 30-40% of the population is non-hispanic white. It's more likely that a random person from my city is not-white. And doesn't this character live in a big city?
...yeah, I'm seeing why people are getting undertones of "racist".
