So if the character isn't explicitely described as Black that automatically means that a character is white?

You know what? Fuck that shit.

I love colorblind casting. I admit, I thought it was weird at first because I've never thought of Lenny Kravitz as an actor, not because of the shade of his skin.

Assuming that a character is white, unless stated otherwise, is a stupid.

Cinna did not have much of a physical description in the book. He has gold eyeliner, short dark hair, looks normal, and has green eyes. Save for the green eyes, Lenny Kravitz has all of this. To say he looks nothing like how he did in the book is just wrong.

There's nothing wrong with having a picture of a character in your head, but to get butthurt over the fact that they cast a black guy when his race was never stated, makes you sound a little racist.

Assuming you're either new here or trolling.

In case it's the former - white should NOT have to be the default all the time.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-25 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
ahahaha, oh my god

So you're saying that a character just has to be white if they weren't stated to be otherwise?

you are either stupid, racist or trolling (all three?)

Watch Precious. I assume his role as a loving, caring mentor-type was part of the reason he came to mind when Cinna was being cast. Also, adding to the choir above me, to my knowledge Cinna is never described as having any particular skin tone/racial background/etc.

[identity profile] imnotasquirrel.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe you shouldn't assume that white is the default.

I really should put on my glasses..

[identity profile] swaggerdoodle.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm actually really excited about Lenny being cast. I liked him in Precious but felt he could do more with a bigger role. Here's his chance! /ps he's hot

[identity profile] ldkirby.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
The only physical description of him that ever really stuck with me is the gold eyeliner. Because gold eyeliner is just so awesome.

But seriously. It's not as if he was ever stated to be white, so I see no contradiction.

I actually thought he was black specifically because of the golden eyeliner... gold stands out and looks much better on dark skin than on pale skin.

I thought the most important aspect of Cinna's appearance was that he wasn't overly decorated like the rest of Capitol. In fact, I don't really remember his description being that significant.

More to the point, it still shouldn't be an issue even if Cinna was explicitly depicted as white. Colorblind casting is great--it's whitewashing that's the issue.

Makes me pissed off that people are complaining about Cinna being black, but conveniently forgetting that they completelly racewashed Katniss and Gale. For crying out loud, Katniss compared her on skin color to Rue's. And the put Jennifer-goddammit-Lawrence to act the part. Grrrr.

(And makes me even more pissed when they said "they choosed her for ~talent~". Yeah, right. They asked for a white actress for a, at least, olive skinned part. Fucking assholes.)

Check your white privilege at the door, y0. There was hardly any mention of Cinna's description and to default to the idea that he's white is the very definition of white privilege.

A friend put it much more eloquently then me:

"...without reading the description, they ASSUMED the character was white. By default to them, all the characters were white. That's basically the very point of white privilege, that you can ignore things like character descriptions or appearance because everyone is white, anyway. Yes, they might not be deliberately ignoring the description or rewriting the character in their heads to be blatantly racist, but at it's heart this the very core of 'privilege'.

But a big problem with white privilege is that it's NOT generally malice that causes things like this to happen. I'm willing to bet NONE of the kids that are so saddened or outraged about these characters would even remotely classify themselves as being "racist". They're trying to to explain away privileged behaviour by saying "Well it's not like I was doing it to be mean!" instead of acknowledging that what they are doing is harmful and dismissive."

(Anonymous) 2011-11-26 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
So what's the description of the character versus how Lenny Kravitz looks? I can understand saying that he doesn't look right if... I don't know.. the author said he has blonde hair and blue eyes -- but just because she didn't explicitly say what colour his skin was doesn't mean he's automatically white.

And even if that's not your assumption there are a lot of people who have been upset about the casting of him and Rue because -- in their words -- they didn't picture them as black. So... you should probably explain yourself a little more because people are going to be sensitive about this.

[identity profile] goobbledigook.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
If white default really is a rule then it's fucking awesome that it was averted and you can choke in your own rage tbqh

[identity profile] nomorefrostbite.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
OP, i'm not calling you racist at all, because when Lenny Kravitz was announced I was all "WHAT? NOT HOW I IMAGINED AT ALL", but he is growing on me, particularly after the trailer.

I'm just wondering really what you meant by "they chose someone who didn't match at all"?

Correct me if i'm wrong, because I did read the books during and the two days after I had major surgery so I was on mad amounts of morphine and may have just not seen it or noticed it, but in the books, I don't think Cinna's specific appearance was really mentioned much other than being totes stylish and a bit minimalist compared to the general Capitol crowd?

So how can he not match? They've made Lenny match completely to the small amount of information that is set down in the actual written canon.

I was surprised about Lenny Kravitz, but more because I always pictured Cinna as Asian for whatever reason. Also a bit younger, but maybe that's just me.

[identity profile] shadowpiranha.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Look, man, all I know is that Cinna has brown hair and wears gold eyeliner. And even if the other black people were described as such and Cinna wasn't, if we're going for "accuracy" Katniss was described in a somewhat detailed way and guess what? Other than the hair dye Jennifer Lawrence looks nothing like the description. Gray eyes? Uncheck. olive skin (typical of the Seam which means fucking Gale would have it too btw)? Uncheck.

So deal with it, it can fucking go both ways and a default race isn't fucking needed!

NO. Go reread the books. Katniss and Peeta's coloring is important due to the difference in economic situations in District 12 that they represent. Cinna's skin color is not important in any way.

[identity profile] avocado-love.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Sucks for you. Oddly, he's almost exactly what I imagined even without the author telling me.

I always pictured Cinna as being black :/ Not sure why, that's just how he appeared to me
(actually, I think it's because of the description of the gold eyeliner. I guess my brain just chose a skin colour that the gold would really stand out on. And I was right- it looks really pretty!)

[identity profile] belatropa.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'm really surprised that this is such a big deal with people - when I heard he was cast as Cinna, I was like, "OH MY GOD, IT'S EXACTLY HOW I PICTURED CINNA, I NEVER EXPECTED THIS." A little older than I'd imagined sure, but what can you do?
