You won't get anywhere if you think like that.

1 here. I'm hurt. I've actually got some popularity. Not what I want, of course, but you know, I see that sentiment a lot. I see people say stuff like "artists who only draw for others don't get any better." In my experience, it's not true.

I figure I will probably get somewhere eventually. I'll probably just drive myself crazy somewhere around the time I do. :D

I never said that.

I'm an artist. I draw for myself, for the people, and for the money, and I do what I have to to get my name out there, which can admittedly involve being annoying sometimes. I strive for popularity, and I know how the climb is, but I don't see how becoming popular would ever tie in with stepping over your friends to do it...

I became popular in an MMORPG by simply sitting there and having my art in a description. The same instance has happened to me in several sites/games I frequent. From my experience, I think the people who have trouble getting popular like that and actually need to screw people over along the way in order to achieve something probably, quite bluntly, don't actually have any talent and certainly don't deserve the credit. If they achieve something, though, they are very lucky. I've seen this myself. Bleh.

Trying to be popular in fandom is kind of a pathetic fantasy anyway, in my opinion. Fanart and fanfiction doesn't make you money, because no one would ever give a shit about your original art beyond the "zomg newest Axel drawringz!!!!!11111111" you did. Being internet-famous is a shitty job and it doesn't pay well.
