It's really quite the trend. After AC came out, it seems like all everyone can talk about is how much everyone else likes VII. Which is funny, because with all the bashing, it's almost beginning to look like VII gets as much unfounded hate as unfounded love.

I get why people think it's overrated, because it really just has always been one of the (if not the) most popular RPGs. But I don't understand the recent trend of claiming that it was one of the worst FFs, or that the fans of it are only trendwhores.

I played the game when it first came out. And when it first came out it was revolutionary. It blew every other RPG of that time out of the water because of the technological advances, the complex storyline and the fact that it was 3D.

I think what's going on here in part is that we older fans still remember the awesomeness of the game when it first came out but the newer game fans never experienced that so they're left wondering what all the fuss is about. Of course that doesn't explain all of the sudden disdain for FFVII but I do think it does explain some of it.
