From what I got, he wanted to spend more time with her. She didn't want to. He flew to California for a few years straight. What? Was he supposed to pack up and move to Phoenix? Sometimes there's no right answer.

I couldn't stand either character. When they weren't awkward with each other -fairly realistic that actually- they didn't feel like characters at all, but an empty suit for the reader to step into (Bella) and a mover of the plot (Charlie).

I could relate to their situation and sympathize with both sides of it, but not to them as people, or even as characters.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-06 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Charlie is the only character I like in the movies (haven't read the books, tbh). It's my headcanon that the reason he's never around is because he's the only person who realizes Bella is a terrible, sociopathic moron who doesn't deserve any effort put into her.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-06 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
lolol, one of my favorite scenes from the movies (Eclipse? I think that was it) is one where Charlie is reading a newspaper article about the murders that have been happening around the area and he ungrounds Bella immediately after reading it as if he's subconsciously hoping that Bella will wander off and get murdered

[identity profile] kasumi-sora.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
lol I need to see this.

[identity profile] 21lights.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Charlie's the only one I like too. I haven't read the books either. But in the movies, he's the only one who has some charisma and personality.

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know about the books, but in the movies Charlie has seemed like a descent enough guy. I know in the books he had that asshole moment with being all "good for you" after Jacob bragged about kissing Bella against her will(and breaking her hand). But they crop a lot of the skeevier things from the movie anyway.

But I think if he wants to make an effort to have some sort of relationship with his daughter, then he has the right too. Bella might have been a brat, but if she didn't want to reciprocate his feelings because she doesn't feel close to him or have any desire to start a father-daughter bond, than that's her choice. Charlie still has the right to try though.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-06 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
you sound incredibly bitter, tbh.

[identity profile] zamkenobi.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
I always felt like Charlie was a fairly sympathetic character in the books, but I couldn't give you any reasons why here because I haven't read the books in a while. I think I just always considered Bella bad daughter because I thought she was a bad person. It just came with the territory.

I think it's also hard to be a good father when your daughter hasn't wanted anything to do with you until her mom remarried.

[identity profile] fortheevulz.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, I haven't read the books directly, so this is probably a biased view, BUT I've gone to blogs that post excerpts from the books and often Charlie's shown as being concerned about Bella (which Bella normally seems pissy about in the narration), and didn't they see each other every summer?

And as for her Mom, she's portrayed as being so hopeless she can't do aaaaanything without her husband or Bella around from what I've seen, so. Why WOULD people care about her?

Twilight cast:
Bella, she's portrayed as being so hopeless she can't do aaaaanything without her boyfriend Edward or Jacob around from what I've seen, so. Why WOULD people care about her?

I think he was a good father, moreso in the movies. Bella from the books was constantly selfish and in the movies they have a better relationship but Stewart's acting makes any relationship on screen look awkward and stilted.

[identity profile] insanenoodlyguy.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Charlie's only problem is that he let it live. But he's a sentimental guy, so I won't hold it against him.

Do you think it's possible you're projecting?

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
From what I remember, Renee ditched him shortly after Bella was born and moved away. What was he supposed to do? End his career and follow Renee-- the woman he was still utterly in love with but wanted nothing to do with him-- to westbubblefuck?

It's been ages since I've read the books but I'm pretty sure Bella visited her father every summer (which is a pretty normal situation for kids who have divorced parents that live a good distance apart). And I'm pretty sure he called her every so often to see how she was doing. So she had absolutely NO excuse to treat Charlie like a douchebag. If she wanted to be with him she could have stayed with him in Forks. Since she OBVIOUSLY didn't want to spend any time with her Dad, I think it's pretty unfair to put all the blame on Charlie who was doing his best.

Hell yes I sympathize with Charlie. And hell yes I think that Bella Swan is a spoiled, arrogant, two-faced bitch-of-a-daughter.

[identity profile] mjisinbflo.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
I got the feeling him not seeing her wasn't Charlie's choice, and that he was a way better parent then her mother was.

[identity profile] xerxes92.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 07:50 am (UTC)(link)
Last I checked, the mom didn't want Charlie to be a part of Bella's life. Charlie had no choice in the matter. He didn't abandon his kid, he had it taken from him. Big fucking difference.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-06 09:54 am (UTC)(link)
"Meanwhile, no one gives a damn about the mother that raised Bella"
Yeah, least of them Bella herself.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-06 11:47 am (UTC)(link)
They're both bad. She's a bad daughter and he's a bad father. The exception is that Charlie does try even if he fails epically at it. I haven't read the books in a long time, but the impression I got of Charlie was he was the only one who was genuinely concerned about Bella, but because the relationship was so awkward he had no idea how to act or show it. He also seemed to be the only one who thought her relationship with Edward was bad news. I recall him mentioning to her that she spends too much time with Edward and the Cullens suggesting she needs to see other people and should call her friends. I don't even think he meant just Jacob, but anyone else who wasn't part of the Cullens. I don't think he ever approved of her relationship with Edward, but merely accepted it because he was clueless on how to discipline her since she'd just lie and sneak out anyways. He pretty much threw his hands up in defeat. I also don't think he ever forgave Edward for what happened in the first book despite Bella constantly saying they worked it out. I think he always blamed him for her accident and probably suspected that he caused it.

I like Burke's portrayal for the most part, but yeah, he does make Charlie look a lot more nicer than he should be.

As a Twilight fan I find this secret and most of the responses to it completely puzzling.

Renee was so hopeless that Bella had to look after her and was actually rearranging her life for her mother's benefit. Bella spent quite a bit of time with Charlie before she and Edward got close and a fair amount afterward; she took over more than her share of the housework and cooking. There was a whole lot of parent-child role reversal on both sides and it's part of how Bella got so screwed up. Also I find it incredibly skeevy how Charlie and Billy Black were trying to push Bella into a relationship with Jacob, the Nice Guy (tm) who couldn't be satisfied with friendship even after Bella pointed out that since she had known him since they were little, she thought of him as a sibling.

I like all the characters relatively well, but none of them are even remotely perfect or healthy or sensible.

Which is okay.

Who expects HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP AND FAMILIAL ROLE MODELS out of a VAMPIRE NOVEL?

Vampire novels are about screwed-up relationships, weird sexual metaphors, power differentials that will always be to the human's detriment (even a 45 year old female CEO doesn't have the kind of wealth or life experience a vampire over 100 has) and purple prose! Either you like that kind of thing or you don't. I do. I don't pretend it's great lit but it is hella entertaining.

Vampire novels, even for teenagers, are never going to be healthy relationship role model books, because a) that's not what people who read vampire novels want out of them and b) an emotionally healthy, sensible person would probably run like hell from every fictional vampire ever, be it Varney, Dracula, Lestat, Nothing, Zillah, Louis, Bill Compton, Eric Northman, Spike, Angel, St Germain, Barnabas Collins, Damon and Stefan...and Edward Cullen. If you like vampires you just kind of have to accept that there will be creepy shit going down.
