I think that's kind of a thing in a lot of AU fanfiction, it's an author's original story, but they don't think they'd get the same amount of attention if they posted it as original fiction. That's obviously not always the case, but I've read some fic where I definitely got that impression.

i had this impression about the author they're talking up above and her xmfc story carpe brewski, so i'm not surprised she's known for other AUs.
