During my brief time in the Inception fandom, one of my favorite fics was an A/E Bakery!AU. *hangs head in shame*

But yeah, judging from a lot of the fics from about January 2011 onward, I agree with you, OP.

Ia. The movie didn't go into the personal lives of anyone beyond Dom and a little bit of Fisher. So yeah... fandom kind of makes up a lot of it. Not that I can blame them. But once you go into a AU it's really distanced from anything in the movie.

I sort of disagree. There is just enough information given about the secondary characters (basically everyone except Cobb, maaaaybe Mal) to form pretty solid ideas about who they are and how they connect to each other to make AUs where the characters themselves are still recognizable.

Now, whether that HAPPENS all the time... personal opinion, I suppose. I've never read the bakery AU so I can't judge that one, but there are a TON of other AUs I've seen that were (imho) IC and fab.

I also agree with the anon above: give no fucks, can read Arthur/Eames until I die, pry this fandom out of my cold dead hands etc. etc.

Let's be honest, it's a damn good bakery AU. (I may be biased, I'm not really in Inception fandom, I just visit occasionally because Arthur/Eames is awesome and because I love crazy AUs. So.)

The amount of AUs is a little disappointing for me because the world of the movie was such a big draw for me. I would love to see that explored in fic more than it is.

Plus, I just don't read AUs much. I enjoy them sometimes, but it's one of those things that has to either sound spectacular or come recommended. But I also don't read A/E much, and I find that the pairings I do read tend to be written in-canon more.

Hm... Well, A/E isn't my pairing of choice (Arthur/Ariadne is mine), but I think that a lot of it is keeping up with the characters. Yes, the movie didn't do a lot in terms of dealing with characters other than Cobb, but there's still stuff there for them.

But I've never really felt the need to read Inception AU, tbh. I've read a couple in the Arthur/Ariadne fandom that were really cute and I think fit the characters well, but I do love the universe the film's set in so I mostly stick to that.

I know a lot of people mention the Bakery!AU as being super popular, but I hardly come across it unless people are specifically reccing AUs.
TBH, I love AUs and there are some truly ones in the Inception fandom, but considering how insubstantial canon is all around, even for the main characters, I do wish we had more fics exploring that world, the concepts, how dream-sharing was developed, other people involved in it, etc. I also wish more fic focused on how these characters became involved in dream-sharing, a lot of fics mention it, but it's usually not the main point and they tend to, uh, not deviate from one another.

I think that's kind of a thing in a lot of AU fanfiction, it's an author's original story, but they don't think they'd get the same amount of attention if they posted it as original fiction. That's obviously not always the case, but I've read some fic where I definitely got that impression.

Oddly enough though, some of the BEST stuff I've found in the Inception fandom tends to be Arthur/Eames.

I feel this way about RPF AU. I don't read it, but I've seen ones where it's historical fic with the author's names changed... like, the summary literally said "so-and-so played by Celeb 1 and what's-his-face played by Celeb 2". Why not just write it as original fic and describe your characters as looking like the actors you have in mind? I know there's already a built-in audience for fic/RPF, but damn...
