I find it difficult to relate to people with children and don't understand people that want them. And I always have that little niggling feeling underneath with every woman that wants children... I think "do you really want children or do you just feel you should have them and want the because that's what women do?" It's not really a loss of respect, but it's a niggling doubt. I feel that way about most women who are very traditionally feminine. "Do you really love makeup or are you insecure about your face? Do you really love romcoms or do you watch them so you have something to talk about with your girlfriends?" Yeah, some people just want it, but sometimes it's hard to carve apart what you want and what people expect of you.
On the flip side, every time I hear a guy say he wants kids I assume he wants them while subconsciously knowing his wife/girlfriend will take the larger half of the childcare burden and that he will never be physically, socially or careerily (is that a word...) burdened in the way his wife is so he can want kids with way fewer strings attached.
Of course I never say any of this out loud. I probably need to stop overanalyzing other peoples' life choices.
