Seems to be the case with a lot of people.

[identity profile] spam-27.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Because kids are so unnatural and terrible? Eesh I get not wanting kids but why all the hate for people that do?

[identity profile] alliterations.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, what?
OP, I can understand if this stems from the annoyance that creators sometimes make a female character's personality change drastically when they want kids, or change a character's personality drastically to make them want kids. And I would agree that's bad writing! But, if that isn't the case, the character is still the same, fundamentally. They just want to have babies. And there's nothing wrong with wanting to have babies.

Um...I don't really like it when they do that either, but it's personal preference. I might be disappointed, but I don't lose respect for them. Having kids doesn't erase all the badass things a character did.

Children ruin shows. How I Met Your Mother is a good example, I'm watching it right now, possibly for the last time.

Personally? Once a (female) character decides she wants kids, I lose interest in her. I avoid children in real life and kid!fic in fandom, so I don't want it in my shows, okay?

(That being said, I don't mind as much when men want kids because, surprise suprise, their girlfriend or whatever usually ends up taking care of the munchkins and Male Character continues doing whatever he was doing initially and the kids don't come up a lot. Not fair, television, not fair.)

I don't lose respect for them, it's just it isn't usually the most interesting plot ever for me, tbh

[identity profile] ionizable.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
if it's just because you feel like all women everywhere shouldn't want to have kids as a reaction to all the societal pressure on them to do so, or because then they'd be doing things that aren't interesting enough for you to watch, then that's kinda dumb, op.

(Anonymous) - 2011-12-06 05:18 (UTC) - Expand

[identity profile] firstofoct.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
What's so wrong with deciding to have kids? The character the OP used was in a committed, stable relationship and could easily take care of a child. Power to women who decide not to become parents for whatever reason, but it's wrong to say that becoming a parent makes a female character less strong or capable. People/characters can do what they like. Female characters face enough criticisms when they don't show maternal desires, and now you're punishing them for maybe reaching a new stage in their lives? Not fair.

Also, that's Sydney fucking Bristow right there that you insulted OP. Not cool.

[identity profile] ascend.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
right because mothers and parent hopefuls totally don't deserve respect

"Losing respect" for the characters is pretty shitty (and why only women?). I will say if a character shows a desire for kids, I can't personally associate with them anymore. It's just too far out of my understanding.

TBH, I used to be like that, when I was 13 - 15. I'm over it, now, but I still don't think pregnancy plots are all that great. I think that's more because of shitty writing/writers running out of ideas of what to do for female characters than "ick, children in my show, bad!"

Agree 100%. They immediately become boring to me. And moreso if they were previously an independent, ass-kicking type who suddenly decides it's baby time... snore fest.

Babies ruin most shows, lbr.

[identity profile] math-camel.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Whatever, but fuck you too.

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
When a character who's never shown interest in having children before suddenly decides to become a mother and homemaker, I lose respect for the writers. It's usually so ooc, that I can't even get mad at the character for it.

But other than that, so? I know it's expected from society and all that, but a lot of women genuinely do want kids. If it creates a crappy storyline as a result, once again, that's bad writing.

[identity profile] shiiblee.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, I hate baby plots, I don't lose respect for the characters, but I don't feel like I can relate to them anymore and I lose interest. I see where you're coming from though.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-06 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
To each their own.

I think that as long as it's not something out of the blue, it's okay. Either it's something that's been built into the character from the beginning (like Monica on Friends) or something they've gradually grown into (like Lilly on How I Met Your Mother), it works for me.

[identity profile] leafing.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
I... I want to argue this, but at the same time I can see why you'd say that? I wouldn't say I'd lose respect for the character, I'd be more likely to kind of mourn them. It seems like a thing where the entire character becomes "babies babies babies babies babies babies babies" a lot of the time and that is, frankly, not very interesting.

Also it depends on what kind of show/book/whatever it is. I can dig it in things like slice-of-lifey types of stuff, but in super action exploding cars diving out of helicopters shit it's like N O P E.

And of course it's always a nice thing when a lady doesn't get "baby rabies" shoehorned into her plotline even in a slice-of-life sort of story.

[identity profile] nomorefrostbite.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
ME TOO, OP, ME TOO!!!

A lot of people will vehemently disagree with this secret, and you know, that's fair enough... they are entitled to their opinions, just like we are.

If it's a natural part of that character, in that kind of genre, then I wouldn't lose respect for them (because I wouldn't particularly have any in the first place to lose), but when it is an ordinarily independant, non-family-interested, kick ass female character, OR INDEED A MALE CHARACTER, who suddenly is all "BABY BABY BABY BABY", I get squicked so fast.
