I was thrilled when Sanji ended up on okama island because I thought he would learn. ...not so much. I´m trying not to give up hope, but it´s hard.

not too sure why you thought he would learn anything. When okama are included in a manga, you know they're going to get made fun of. tbh, I can't really think of many manga with okama where people don't say or do something at least mildly transphobic towards them

You really think Oda's goal was going to be to make some kind of deep, social justice-y commentary?

Or did he just want to make some cheap jokes?

Maybe try Gintama? The okama characters do get made fun of, but not more than Gintama makes fun of, well, pretty much everything. The first story that features the okama characters does have transphobic characters (in this case, children), but it's made clear that they're wrong.

Also, when our hero Gintoki is also forced to crossdress and work in an okama bar (and later in a hostess club), it's not treated as "omg this is wrong and evil, why would anyone do this, these people are disgusting". It's "whelp, I don't personally enjoy this but whatever, I'll do it since I have to, you're free to be whoever you want to be".

thanks for the rec, I've been meaning to check out Gintama for a while but never got around to it, so maybe this is a sign!

There's also a manga with a MtF and a Ftm main characters, and it was done pretty well but I can't think of the name

Gintama is great, but it does require a certain kind of humour. XD Everything gets made fun of, but it can also be really heart-warming and/or -wrenching.

Family Compo has lots of trans characters, too, if you're looking for those themes. It's a drama/comedy slice-of-life manga and has all kinds of gender-bending themes. http://www.mangafox.com/manga/family_compo/

I'm usually pretty partial to some of the more off-the-wall manga, so I think I'll enjoy it! :D
