I hate the lengths creators go to in order to keep those kind of plots going. It usually requires one or more characters to constantly hold the Idiot Ball and for most, if not all, character development to be immediately forgotten by the next episode. (I always wondered why Wile E. Coyote didn't just order some food, if he had the money to make multiple orders that were able to be delivered to the middle of the desert.)

(Anonymous) 2011-12-07 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I figure that's exactly what the Coyote did. He's been doing this a long time and hasn't starved to death or anything, he's clearly eating something. He just really wants to catch that Roadrunner.

I agree with this entirely. It always makes me feel bad for the main character when they're trying so hard to reach this one goal and can never get it. Hell, even Candice's inability to catch a break upsets me after a while. I can never watch too many episodes of Phineas and Ferb in a row because of that, in part at least.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
I like some of those types of plots and not others, but Candace does get to me. I guess because part of me just wishes she'd go find something else to do because Phineas and Ferb are just having fun. (Even though I like her and ship her and Jeremy in a big way.)

But that ep where she succeeded and created the alternative universe cracked me up. I guess their ability to laugh at the whole thing helped.

I don't watch that show but I know it's popular. From the commercials I've seen I assumed the two boys are brothers and she's their sister? If she can't catch a break I'd just assume the boys are messing with her just like brothers like to do with sisters? If not, then disregard hehe.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see it often enough myself...

One's her brother and the other is her stepbrother. Sometimes they're messing with her and sometimes they're just doing their thing and she really wants their mom to catch them at it.

The thing is, nothing permanently bad ever comes of their inventions so it's hard to get behind wanting Candace to succeed (though she doesn't come off as horrible exactly either IMO since they do some wild things.)

[identity profile] twilightedge.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Lol oh, I see. She's the coyote eh? =)

[identity profile] badass-tiger.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 12:38 pm (UTC)(link)
They're not really messing with her. They're just doing their thing. They genuinely love her, and even when she's trying to bust them, they sometimes help out.

Candace says herself that it's because she wants to protect them, but a lot of it is probably from jealousy, and wanting power over them.

Well, if I caught my brothers building a giant rollercoaster I'd also like my mum to see it to prove I'm not insane ;)

[identity profile] the-kumquat.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my god, I had no idea that's what you called those! I am behind you 100% OP, and I'm glad I can now put a name to that sort of story.
I always hated Tom and Jerry, because after a while, I started to feel really bad for Tom. After a certain point, all I can do is remember the times Jerry was a douche to Tom and get sick of his smug little face when he wins every time.

[identity profile] 09019.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
same!

Woah I finally get why I hate most of those "chase" old cartoons.

I don't mind when it's a different thing every week, but with a kind of reset, but still. blah.

[identity profile] the-kumquat.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, I guess it was the fact that I can remember each episode happening to the same characters one after the other, while in the show, it's as if each episode is a separate event that only occurs once to the character. So while the show gets reset, every time I watch, I end up with a mental tally of (for example) all the times Tom was a dick to Jerry and got him riled up or in trouble just for the hell of it. And those times ALWAYS numbered greater than the number of times Jerry wasn't just doing his job but was tormenting Jerry for the fun of it.

I just have a lot of feelings about cartoons, you guys.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-07 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Right behind you, OP. I've hated those plots with the passion of a thousand nuclear bombs going on inside a black hole and making the universe collapse on itself since I first watched TV after becoming self-aware.

And I love that picture of Sisyphus in the background. Woof.

[identity profile] kryptoncat.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 11:04 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, I can get behind this idea on some shows, but on others I can't.

I feel for Candice not being able to prove to her mom what her brothers get into; the whole situation feels so frustrating! I think Candice would be able to get over busting her brothers, too, if she was only able to get it out of her system a few times.

However, I love the Coyote/Roadrunner cartoons. I think it's because everything is so over the top I can't take it seriously. Whereas many episodes of Tom and Jerry just felt mean-spirited.

I haven't watched Gilligan in a long while; I liked what I remember, but I do get the feeling there's a good reason why the trope 'Just Eat Gilligan' exists.

[identity profile] foreba-arone.livejournal.com 2011-12-11 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
This is the reason why I have not been in a lot of cartoon fandoms. :( All but Avatar the last airbender. I don't really need some epic action adventure plot to enjoy a show but a little bit of continuity and events to keep things fresh never hurts.

[identity profile] acksed.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
If it's for random gags like Looney Tunes, I can take it. But in a regular serial series? Not today, not ever. Ask me about any Charlie Brown plot ever and watch me rage.

P.S. Actual harem series that aren't guaranteed to fail do exist; they're usually manga, like Iono the Fanatics and Umi no Misaki.
