I used to collect merchandise, probably not a lot (I didn't have a lot of money) but I ended up stopping when I realized that all merchandise tends to do is sit in the back of a closet and collect dust.

So I made a rule for myself, I cannot buy things unless they have some sort of USE, be it a book, a dvd, a cd, clothing, whatever, there has to be some entertainment value past sitting on a shelf.

This rule did end up making my dvd collection HUGE but I think it helps, because I no longer buy things for the "collectable" reasons. Collections can often be a black hole for your money because if you love complete collections like I do, you always feel bad when you don't have everything (which is a problem because I never could afford everything.)

I've tried to keep to this standard when it comes to my own collecting. I do have a handful of "show pieces" that are just for display, and I think I'm able to enjoy them more because I was able to hold myself to only getting those few things and leaving the rest of my collection to more reusable/replayable items. Thank you for the reminder.

Same here. I also realized that I came to appreciate more the few things I bought just because. It made them more special and dear to me, somehow, by not being just part of a collection.

I haven't made a rule of this, but I live in a small space and therefore have been gravitating more towards things with a use lately anyway, and I totally love it. I have a bunch of pretty folders for all my papers, and this fantastic Pokemon tea tray that I use every day. Those things end up feeling much more valuable to me that most of my plush/figurines ever did.
