Okay, I just speed-read.

I have to agree with you on the telling vs. showing, but I still think Andrew does an okay job with that style, which not many do.

The story and its style ARE deeply flawed. There are so many tangents and unnecessary filler moments that weren't really needed. Like Andrew himself admitted, juggling so many characters was not a good idea. A cool as they might be, they were not for this one story, because it was practically impossible to do them all justice. So you end up with only 8-ish characters well developed, and the other 8 just sort of there with only a few cool moments. (And Eridan keeps getting shafted. I agree with the person who said that Fanon!Eridan rocks, though, more so than Canon!Eridan. Aradia, Feferi, Equius, Nepeta and Kanaya had potential for awesome, and I think even Sollux didn't get enough spotlight.)

There is also that annoying sense of idiosyncratic humor that tries too hard to be IRONIC and CLEVER. If you don't already like that kind of humor, it is a very quick mood-killer, since it's interwoven with the whole story.

And, oh crap, the constant shifting POVs! Those kept driving me crazy, and still do.

Oh, and I'm still not happy with the seizure-inducing gifs. I'm still shocked that he hasn't put up a warning about possible epilepsy attacks.

I do have to disagree with you on the YOU HAVE TO PLAN BEFORE WRITING OR YOU SUCK. Your skill as a writer does not depend on planning. Some people do need to plan everything in detail if they want to write a good story, sure, but other writers can wing it just fine! And even many others only need a rough time-line and some notes and invent the rest as they go. (Like Tom Sidell of Gunnerkrigg Court. That's some fine story-telling there, of the more "show instead of telling" variety.)

Andrew is a good example: he left himself enough room to maneuver and is very good at making callbacks and interlacing plot-points without having to plan them.

If you (and me, I read that Formspring answer as well and was surprised!) hadn't found out that he didn't plan the plot beforehand, would you have suspected it? I wouldn't have.

Andrew is good at really complex plot and time-travel/dimension-twisting shenanigans. Just look at Problem Sleuth! The fact that both Problem Sleuth and Homestuck need frequent recaps to remember what is going is a testament to Andrew's insane ability to retaining information in his head and knowing how to use it. The man is very intelligent, if nothing else.

*EDIT: Wait, I just remember, he admitted to the not planning things on his blogspot, not on his formspring.
