I disagree with countess like 95% of the time, but I thought they...kind of had a point? I mean, applying some filters and text to a picture doesn't really seem like art worthy of many accolades to me.

I'm convincible though. by all means, explain to me why you disagree (not being sarcastic, just genuinely curious)

Putting aside that sometimes simple mods can create powerful imagery out of an everyday cap and instead working off the assumption that no great products come from that type of work -- that doesn't mean it's not art. Maybe it's NOT great art worthy of accolades, but somebody thought about it, did the work and likely is proud of it. And it's one thing to not like it or to wish for something more, but to jump up and down about how it's not art and how its mere existence pisses you off is pretty damn douche-baggy, which is why I have a problem with CountessK's attitude.

This isn't going to be anywhere near as eloquent as my last reply, but LJ ate that so I apologize in advance if this comes off weird.

While I agree that fandom photo manips are often cheaply-done and frankly pretty awful, dismissing photo manipulation in general as an art form (which it sort of sounds like countess_k is doing) is kind of rude. If it is done right, some beautiful and fascinating imagery can come out of photo manipulation.

Some examples I like:




Technically, any modification made to a photograph (including such things as minor color adjustments, sharpening a photo, eliminating red eye, etc.) is photo manipulation, so any magazine you'll find today is just about guaranteed to have a photo manip on the cover. People don't actually have skin that smooth and eyes that bright in every single photo taken of them.

Now, I will say that in the context of Big Bangs and fandom exchanges with art, I would be pissed if the art I received for a story I wrote was a photo manip simply because fandom manipulations tend to look like they took less than 30 minutes to create with, as you said, a filter and some text. It doesn't mean that it isn't art, but it would make it very difficult for me to be grateful to have it as an illustration for something that I probably put a lot of work into.

Just my two cents.
