I know some people said that it would make the Duke get his due, but let's be honest, I don't think a murder of a courtesan would stick on a weasel like him. Plus it would've meant he won, that love didn't conquer all, which was the movie's message. Moulin Rouge would not have that large night even if it was the last one they ever had, robbed Satine of her big night and dying with grace, Christian would not have the will to live on and possibly waste his life hunting down the Duke and/or killing him.

I haven't seen the film in years so I could be wrong but wasn't the point of the downer ending with Satine dying anyway meant to be sort of a blunt message that, after all the singing and dancing about it, love didn't conquer all? That no matter what they overcame they could never be together?
Could just be my cynical mind remembering it here though.
