It's not that you ignore a huge part of the story, it's that you have to accept the medium; it's an homage to text-based adventures that started off with a need for a lot of user input and laid the groundwork for the story. You'll note that at the start of the story, you see everything John does, but as time passes, your view gets more and more 'macro'. For example, take the entry into the Medium. John's is the focus of a whole act. Rose's takes the space of a flash to illustrate. Dave's is glossed over, and Jade's is rarely mentioned. As the story moves along, it increases in complexity and decreases in granularity.

I started reading Homestuck as it came out, having read MSPA since midway through Problem Sleuth. I never had any trouble understanding what was going on; if I didn't understand what was happening, a rewatch/reread and some browsing of the Forum straightened everything out. Of course, being a serial reader may have helped with that; I was never taking in too much at once. I do remember getting headaches from archive-dumping Problem Sleuth, but those were from how hard I was laughing. YMMV, though, of course.
