You really should have known better, OP. I'm not sure if it's just me, but every time I actually do come across super best friends who are M/F who don't dig each other (either from the beginning or eventually), one of them turns out to be gay.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
.... I can't even begin to touch on how assholeish this comment is.

you should check the wording of this comment. On both the first and second reading, I got the impression you were talking about RL and not movies, tv shows, books and stuff.

But if you do mean RL as well... no. Just no. Really, no.

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Let me elaborate.

I. First sentence = sarcasm.

II. I was referring to popular media (t.v shows and such). I don't watch many of 'em, but that (scenario) ended up being the case in a lot of the shows I've watched (save a small few, like Friends(.

III. Personal observations do not reflect personal beliefs. Mo.

Really OP, you're surprised? In 99% (aww yeah, made up statistic!) of mainstream western media, if a man & women are all bff then they will either end up fucking or the dude will be gay. Just the way it goes nowdays.

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
When I was little I didn't think about it much, but as an adult...yeah. Especially when they were saying how weird it would be to get married, then wham!-they're adults and suddenly fall in love with each other. They were cute friends, and I wish they didn't end up falling for each other. No wait, I wish media could let a man and a woman be friends without there having to be romance at some point(and without having to add a "reason" as to why they won't be romantically involved).

[identity profile] fm-gatekeeper.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I feel you. I grew up with my best friend; our families knew each other before I was even born and he's a year older than me. He's male, I'm female, he's straight, I'm bisexual, and we're both in very happy, very separate relationships. The last time I had any interest in him at all, I was thirteen and trust me that didn't last long. It was more of a just-hit-puberty-and-am-discovering-people-around-me-exist sort of thing.

Granted, I ship best friends a LOT and I usually think they're adorable together (this case included), but it does bother me that it can't ever NOT HAPPEN. Especially since it ALWAYS happens between heterosexual best friend pairings yet people still get flack for shipping homosexual best friend pairings because omg they're friends, so different you guys. Ugh.

Well it's Disney..Getting to know each other?! Fuck that shit!

[identity profile] dgcatanisiri.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Kind of inevitable in the overall scheme, I think - I mean, besides Serabi and Shinzi, Nala's the only named female in the movie. Someone had to turn out to be the love interest.

That said, yeah, it's disappointing when media can't portray friends of compatible orientation being nothing more than friends. Harry and Hermione are about the only cases of best friends who are different gendered where it doesn't come into play I can think of. And one more thing on my list of 'things that I want to portray in my own writings'...

I never really thought about it before. It's a very standard formula, though.

[identity profile] lolofielding.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
As much as I think the romance is 'rushed', I don't get it when people say it was pointless. In regards to Simba's whole resolution with facing Scar then I guess I can see how him getting with Nala probably just seems like filler. But I always thought the whole point was that he needed to find a mate so that the movie could end with his own cub being born and, thus, the circle of life moving on. Also I don't even think it's the most rushed Disney has done a romance. They were childhood friends, they were betrothed from birth so there was some foundations for it there. Not as bad as say in Snow White or Cinderella where the couples barely exchange lines and suddenly they're off to be married. :P

I guess they could have it be more realistic and just had him become king and the cub be from one of his harem of lionesses but that wouldn't exactly be Disney now would it. XD

I saw it coming a mile away.

I usually don't like BFF > lovers ships, but this and Tai/Sora are the exceptions.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
He has to have a cub and heir to bring the story full circle. Nala's a better choice than a new lioness who shows up at the end of the story and has no name or character development whatsoever. Also, it's a Disneyfied version of Hamlet with cartoon lions. Who the hell cares that it buys into the childhood best friend = future lover trope? Kids are not sophisticated enough to pick apart why that rarely happens in the real world, nor do they care.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, this kind of bothered my when i was younger.

[identity profile] kycoo.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Meh, it's better than making Simba have a thing for his mother, like the way Shakespeare did it. :P

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it was obvious they were going to end up a couple because of the scene where they acted disgusted about being betrothed, but I definitely agree that the whole romance thing felt rushed (even by Disney movie standards).

Sure, they were childhood friends and everything, but after not seeing each other for years, they're supposedly "in love" about an hour after being reunited. I guess you could argue that it's just because they're animals, but they act so humanlike throughout most of the movie that that justification doesn't really work for me.

I seriously thought I was the only one who felt this way.

[identity profile] nyxelestia.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with you, OP. :(

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Oh well.

[identity profile] avocado-love.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
Did you miss that whole back and forth about them being betrothed? It should have been a big red flag right there...

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved Simba and Nala as a pairing as a kid.
It was obvious from the beginning that they liked each other.

[identity profile] rare-lj.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, it sucks, I loved their friendship and I wish the only female character in the movie hadn't been the romantic interest.

[identity profile] philstar22.livejournal.com 2011-12-10 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
I really hate the idea that just because men and women can be friends without it turning romantic means that somehow close friends of opposite genders can never be romantically involved. Yes, men and women can be friends. But yes, sometimes men and women who are friends fall in love. And that is okay. Having one couple who were friends first does not say that no other group of opposite genders can ever be friends.

That being said, it is a bit rushed in the Lion King movie. But that is true for most Disney movies. The musical version is a little better. And mostly, I just ship anyways. They are adorable together.

And there are plenty of close friendships in the media that don't turn into romance. Harry, Ron, and Hermione were all best friends, and only Ron and Hermione were romantically involved in canon. Buffy and Xander remained friends without being romantically involved, and while Willow and Xander had a brief period of kissing, they went back to being best friends with no romance. Mal and Zoe were best friends with no hint of romance. Benjamin Sisco and Jadzia Dax were friends without any romance. It happens plenty.

I would have been the first to agree with this secret a few years ago, but ugh... my best (male) friend who I've known for almost like 10 years now started working out a while back and I saw him with his shirt off and I thought, "Hot. He's grown up goood". Dreamt about fucking him that night. Mindfucked me for months; I've only ever thought of him as a kid (he's a few years younger than me). And never mind guys, I've felt sexual attraction towards every close female friend I've ever had. I'm starting to think I can't be close to someone without thinking about fucking them. I never do because I value my friendships and its easy enough to get laid elsewhere, but man, the attraction is there.

...is this just me? How the hell do you turn off sexual attraction for a certain category of people that you label "friends"? I can understand being attracted but choosing not to act on it, but not being attracted at all...
