That happened to me with a N-17 doujinshi at the Sydney Airport. I felt myself getting embarrassed so I just put on a big shit-eating grin. It kind of worked. Beyond widened eyes, the guy didn't comment.

[identity profile] micromyni.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
I had about five of them in that bag, he just happened to pull out the tamest of them, which was an original doujin with normal-looking humans, bondage and pegging. I'm just glad he didn't pull out the Mass Effect one(xenophilia?!) or the Transformers one(robot porn? Wtf is wrong with this chick?!) I don't think he expected the porn when he opened the book, the covers weren't provocative in the slightest. Poor guy.

Everybody's got their kink. People who are judgmental about the kinks of others probably have worse kinks they're hiding :P Pretty rude of someone to make commentary about something completely unrelated to security issues IMO.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
It's not a kink!

It's more urban fantasy meets romance NC15 at worst series.

Just superficially dubious occasionally. Had spectacularly poor luck on the scene they stopped on.

[identity profile] thesaneminority.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I've had that happen before. I was reading Ranma 1/2 while we had some downtime in class, and one of my classmates kept exclaiming that I was reading porn. To prove his point, he grabbed the book and opened it to a random page - which happened to be taking place in a bathhouse and had a lot of naked women walking around.

[identity profile] lady-laguna.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
LOL sorry I didn't mean to imply it was something I considered taboo. It's just a common quote I use. I just meant to say that one shouldn't be ashamed, even if it was something saucy, because pretty much everyone has something saucy they do behind closed doors.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty rude of someone to make commentary about something completely unrelated to security issues IMO.

pretty god damned unprofessional, too.

ohwait...this is homeland security level paranoia we're talking about. professionalism isn't in their guide book.

Haha THEY'RE PROTECTING OUR FREEDUMB they don't have to treat us with respect or anything.

[identity profile] weekendoffender.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
That's why I plan to wipe my computer of even the most wholesome porn when I take my laptop overseas. I remember reading somewhere that some guy was arrested over some fully legal porn he had in his laptop a while back.

And yeah, while if you were male you mightn't have been arrested, you would probably have been judged a hell of a lot more.

[identity profile] mistaria.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Do they actually look at the contents of someones laptop now in airports? o_o When I flew to London/Greece from the US in 2009 they would just have people open the lids of their laptops if they had them to make sure... IDK... they weren't hiding things under the screen? No one had to start their laptop or anything else that I noticed.

[identity profile] weekendoffender.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
I have no clue, to be honest. Maybe they found something like the OP had & decided to check the laptop too. From what I remember of the story (I didn't pay it much mind at the time), the dude was arrested in a US airport, had his laptop confiscated & was later released but not given the laptop back, because of some 'barely legal' porn (which the article specified was 100% legal).

I'm trying to google it now, but all I'm getting is that recent dude who was caught with child porn.

Also, wow, awful luck. It's moments like these when paranoia pays off.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Er, arrested? Can't really tell from OP's picture, but I'm guessing for CP? Not sure what else could justify an arrest.
As for the security officer examining your reading material, I think that may be over stepping the boundaries a little. Ink on paper is not a security threat.

[identity profile] ontogenesis.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
In some countries (including Canada I believe), any underage fictional characters in a sexual situation = BAD BAD GO TO JAIL DO NOT PASS GO. Some guy got arrested in the airport for having lolita(?) doujin or something in his luggage in Canada.

Whereas in the US, our Supreme Court ruled that computer-generated or "fake" underage porn (including children) does not harm real children, so it's A-OK and protected under the First Amendment.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
Although it isn't protected from obscenity laws though. That's what happened to Christopher Handley, IIRC. And stuff like lolicon/shotacom manga will add to your jail sentence if you're a sex offender.

Although, IMO, obscenity laws are unconstitutionally vague. But you know they would never appeal them, violating the First notwithstanding.

Is it underage? Or is NC17 really that harsh where you live?

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
This is why I hate any type of body search/baggage check, because you can't trust the person in charge to not be a dick. Your job is to check for weapons and drugs, not to judge people for their taste and embarrass them because you're given the right to go through their (mostly private) personal belongings.

[identity profile] joshua-glass.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
I almost ALWAYS get pulled aside for a 'random' baggage check (not sure what's intimidating about me or whether I am the token white chick), and since I am anal about my packing, to the point where my chargers/electronics are all packed in neatly labeled ziploc bags, I always have to bite my tongue not to be snarky when they ask, "And what is this?"

It takes all of my self control not to answer with things like, "It's labeled camera charger, I think it might be my vibrator."

Since I'm aware airport security staff are screened prior to hiring to make sure they don't have a sense of humour, I resist the urge to say it.

Funnily enough though, the one time I didn't get pulled aside, I had a carry-on full of doujinshi and racy fanart from Otakon (because I've had too many bad experiences with items 'missing' from my luggage when I get to my destination). XD

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe you looked too nervous/looking around too much?

Well, given this evidence, I can totally come to the very scientific conclusion that you need to carry doujinshi and racy fanart to avoid being checked!

It obviously has the effect of creating a magical field barrier around you that makes you inconspicuous. True fact.

Ah man, this is why whenever I go overseas, I make sure any laptops I bring have nothing on them and that I don't bring any suggestive reading material with me. Well, at least its over, OP. :( I would die if that happened to me.
