I almost ALWAYS get pulled aside for a 'random' baggage check (not sure what's intimidating about me or whether I am the token white chick), and since I am anal about my packing, to the point where my chargers/electronics are all packed in neatly labeled ziploc bags, I always have to bite my tongue not to be snarky when they ask, "And what is this?"

It takes all of my self control not to answer with things like, "It's labeled camera charger, I think it might be my vibrator."

Since I'm aware airport security staff are screened prior to hiring to make sure they don't have a sense of humour, I resist the urge to say it.

Funnily enough though, the one time I didn't get pulled aside, I had a carry-on full of doujinshi and racy fanart from Otakon (because I've had too many bad experiences with items 'missing' from my luggage when I get to my destination). XD

Maybe you looked too nervous/looking around too much?

Well, given this evidence, I can totally come to the very scientific conclusion that you need to carry doujinshi and racy fanart to avoid being checked!

It obviously has the effect of creating a magical field barrier around you that makes you inconspicuous. True fact.

Haha, I think it's the cane. XD They feel a twenty-something couldn't possibly have a need for one, so they pull me aside. Though the nervous thing could be true too. I am not very good at being by myself in large crowds, especially malls/airports where people are behind me all the time. I haaate people behind me.

*makes a note to carry at least one racy thing with her on every vacation though just in case*

Oh, well, with the extra security in most airports, they're probably worried that you could use it as a weapon... so naturally they feel they have to look through your things to see if you are carrying plastic ninja stars or "how to build bombs" manuals to confirm their suspicions? I don't know.

RE: people behind you

Brrr, me too. I can't even play FPS or any action-packed First Person Perspective games for fear of being attacked from behind. That's how nervous it makes me. :I

I don't feel comfortable alone in large crowds either.

Come to think of it, the few times I traveled I was always stopped for a luggage check, even if it was "random". Huh. Uneasy people who attract the attention of airport security thanks to their nervousness high five, I guess? XD

My mom and I actually fight over who gets the wall seat if we're at a restaurant where only one seat backs against the wall. I wonder if we were criminals in a past life. XD
