I don't know about anyone else, but I find it's hard to get a good look unless you're positioning yourself awkwardly over a mirror. It's not like a penis where it's hanging out in the open - the only thing you're going to see from the front is the mons, labia majora and, depending on the woman, part of the labia minora. And if you've got a lot of hair and don't shave or trim, that can obscure things as well.

Basically, unless you do some gymnastics you're not going to be looking at the inner parts of your own crotch.

I always figured they just weren't built for looks and that is someone wants to see mine (well, someone's) it's because of what they want to do with it and not because they just want to stare.

Yep, this. And the leaflets I got given during sex ed said the same thing - it's really hard to get a proper look at your own vagina without a mirror so most girls don't see theirs until they go out of their way to do it.

I'm wondering if the comment up thread is by a guy, cause when I explained to one of my guy-friends that a lot of girls go most of their childhoods without seeing their own vaginas he was confused because it's so different for guys.

While this is definitely true, you can generally get a feel for what's there with your hands. I don't think I ever sat down with a mirror until I was like 15 or so, but there was nothing that surprised me there. You can pretty much know what's down there without a mirror.
