This is just a general rule, because there are some authors whose creepy creepy messages are interlaced in their writing (OSC I'm looking at you), but so many good books have been written by horrible people. In the end, if you like the story, and if it has something meaningful to say to you, then you should take it as is and ignore the author altogether.
Unless they're really nice. Then it's awesome.

A+ to this post overall. Sometimes I think even college lit courses point people too far in the direction of scrutinizing the author to understand the work. I dig T.S. Eliot's poetry, but I slogged through a six-hundred-page biography of the guy in a class on Yeats & Eliot and wow was he an enormous douchebag.
When trying to separate authors from their work I just think "Welp, I do this all right when it's ignoring gossipy checkstand magazines about more visible celebrities. Same principle."

I feel the same way about CS Lewis, too. Use to love Narnia as a kid, but now that I'm a) no longer a Christian and b) can recognize all the Biblical stuff, I can't read it anymore because I feel like I'm just reading one gigantic Bible allegory and getting preached at. Plus all the racism.
