[Holly Black, Spiderwick Chronicles]

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I feel the same way when she talks about Cassie Clare's YA series. Yeah, yeah, I know they're friends and everyone's got different tastes in books, but I don't know how she writes so well if she thinks Twilight and Mortal Instruments aren't crap.

[identity profile] inboots.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
maybe she does think they are crap, but since they are all buddies (stephenie meyer has also recommended clare's books) and part of a literary clique of sorts, she says otherwise.

[identity profile] gone-to-florrum.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't that more a sign that you should ignore the author's recs rather than stop reading their work though? I always find myself somewhat baffled when readers get upset because a writer they like doesn't share the same tastes as them.

so much word. like, at least Twilight is generic as fuck- Cassie Clare's stuff is all kinds of bad fanfic tropes plus general unreadability

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I've actually heard somewhere that Holly's part of the reason that Cassie's published. I'm not sure how true that is, but I am sure that Holly read (and loved) the Draco triology before she became friends with her.

[identity profile] myrioddity.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Oops, my thought reading this secret was "Gosh, I wonder if she just likes Twilight because it makes her writing look good!" >> Sorry, Black & fans. I've not tried any of her other books, but I thought Tithe was terrible.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Tithe is actually the series I love most. (Respect your opinion just pointing out)

What didn't you like about it?
ext_405598: (bang bang)

[identity profile] murderershair.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
I enjoyed Tithe in a "this is really silly and over the top way" personally

[identity profile] zippytheavenger.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't get that she supported Twilight so much as wanted to open a discussion about it. I think she was just being magnanimous.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. OP, I think the two things that she was actually speaking out about two things;

- with female-centred wish-fulfilment like Twilight there's criticism not only of the text but of the audience, which doesn't happen anything like as much with male-centric wish fulfilment.

- some adult commentators are uncomfortable with the Twilight series because it's allowing teenage girls to indulge in sexual fantasies and the text overall lends itself to a number of kinks.

I'm going to admit, I don't agree with some of the things said about the latter (and I think that she expressed herself VERY poorly when she tried to elaborate) but I take her point; I have seen a lot of people (mostly young men) who seemed squicked by the series based on the idea that girls might be getting off on it. Not even because it's creepy - just because it's "girls fap material".

Despite reviling this series, I totally agree with the former point.

I think that she expressed herself very poorly within the post and comments, but I think she just wanted to get people to take a step back and think about the series and take a closer look at some, perhaps questionable criticisms surrounding it.

As to her liking it - if she does, she does.

Sorry, I use picnik and it came out easier to read on the preview. :(

Yeow. Hello, diet motivation.

[identity profile] alliterations.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't surprise me, honestly, but it's still disappointing. Although, frankly, I didn't enjoy either of the Tithe books (meaning, the ones directly involving Kaye), but I did really, really love Valiant. I wish she wrote a sequel for that instead.

I can't read your secret anymore.

;_;

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I just think this is silly. Sorry. Personally, I would just ignore her personal opinion about that stuff if you don't agree. Think about it this way: She might like it (hell everyone likes something, either in a guilty pleasure or completely serious manner, that many would find cheesy or just lain bad) but Twilight's angle has not leaked into her own work. Honestly, I'd enjoy the works she produces and if she has opinions about stuff as inoffensive YA books that differ from mine, not care about her personal taste.

[identity profile] myuki-chan.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah... I was torn on my opinion of her after knowing she's like, bffs with Cassie Clare and loves her writing. CC's books will always make me cringe when I see them on the shelves and they make me so angry.

I don't like Holly Black (various reasons I've forgotten because it's been so long since I read Tithe), but this is probably a good moment for you to learn to seperate books from their authors, OP.

This is just a general rule, because there are some authors whose creepy creepy messages are interlaced in their writing (OSC I'm looking at you), but so many good books have been written by horrible people. In the end, if you like the story, and if it has something meaningful to say to you, then you should take it as is and ignore the author altogether.

Unless they're really nice. Then it's awesome.

First I was all: !!TITHE SECRET?!?!! :D :D :D

Then I was all: ...DD: Twilight.....

I'm hoping it's just her trying to be nice/try to up her own book sales/something along those lines. If not... well, The Modern Tale of Faerie series is still fun, so whatever.

Twilight is incredibly popular, so it doesn't make much sense to be super shocked that someone likes it. I didn't think I would like it after reading a bunch of essays and reviews, but when I picked it up I really enjoyed it. I think it's time for you to get over the idea that people you like and authors whose work you enjoy and relate to will all hate what you hate and like what you like.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
Not everyone shares the same opinions, but sometimes we can't help losing a little respect for someone when they support something that not everyone is in favor of. It's a shame to hear it ruined the series for you, but don't lose hope just yet!

[identity profile] iteari.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Twilight is a popular series. I have friends, smart friends, friends whose recommendations have led me to great stuff, like the books. I prefer to criticize the bad books, movies, et al, rather than the people that enjoy them---FYI, I was bullied a lot when I was younger, and one thing they always used against me was whatever I liked that they didn't.

You know, I enjoy Showgirls. It's a big guilty pleasure for me (its badness is so beautiful!) Just because I like ONE movie everyone else hates, doesn't really mark me as silly, stupid, or whatever and it doesn't mark what kind of other stuff I like.

[identity profile] bluekodachi.livejournal.com 2011-12-11 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
1) Holly Black liking Twiilight shouldn't affect how much you like her books.

2) Liking Twilight doesn't make you a bad or tasteless person.

3) She was trying to bring up ideas about how we treat women and their sexuality.

4) Considering how much money Twilight has brought to the publishing industry so that publishers can afford to take a chance on more unknown authors, I wouldn't be surprised if other authors had some affection for Stephanie Meyer.
